when ever i play some songs or games the sound locks

for example in flight simulator 2002, soul reaver 2 and other applications the sound gets locked and keeps on repeating itself. Then if you go and try to play winamp, it won;t play it but stay frozen. and when an alert appears the sound just keeps on repeating itself again again.<br>
It started out ever since i downloaded an automatic update for windows me. Is this to do with my mobo, my sound card, or just my stupid os?<br>

by the way its an onboard sound card<br>

well if it's a via chipset get the latest 4 in 1's, otherwise, try a windows update
