In other words saying: "The 1 MB block limit was set by Nakamoto and is the consensus - changing this would be considered a deviation of the original design" makes you look ...

In 2010, a block size limit of 1 MB was introduced into Bitcoin by Satoshi Nakamoto. He added it hidden in two commits[1] in secret, when challenged publicly he said it is a safety measure to prevent miners from creating large spam blocks. The limit was not changed again before Nakamoto disappeared and right now is part of bitcoin's consensus rules requiring a hard fork to change.

As I said, it is the consensus and is unlikely to change. Although forks can happen (like Bitcoin Cash), Bitcoin will likely remain 1 MB for the foreseeable future.
