OK I allways do it this way:

    1 Unpack AMD Driver
    2 patch ati2mtag.sy_
    3 recab resulting ati2mtag.sys (make cab ati2mtag.sys)
4 overwrite original ati2mtag.sy_ with new one
    5 edit line in CA_85569.inf

P.S. I don't modify the patch script, do I have to??

HD2900XT and HD4870 same performance after soft mod??

These are the results modding HD2900XT 512meg Sapphire with 8.453.1 drivers for XP64, Modded to FireGL 8650

These are the results modding HD4870 1.24GB Sapphire with 6.33 drivers for XP64, Modded to FireGLPro 8700

Also I did some comparisons with 3ds Max, using a high poly car during orbiting, shows 22 fps same exact results both cards..

What gives why are they the same? The Mod worked correct? Thanks.

The mod is correct :). The majority of the 3D apps like maya and max are CPU limited. So you'll get the same performance.

Does that go for specview benchmark too? I would have thought that there would have been some performance increase between the two cards. For the most part specview is just orbiting stuff.

I did notice my motherboard is not PCI-E 2.0. Would be interesting to see the results on a mother board with 2.0. Appearantly 2.0 is double the bandwidth.

-edit- Glad its working thanks for the help!

Hopefully Viewperf 11 is coming soon and gives us a better benchmarking experience ;)

Been noticing some issues with, 8.633, will that script work with 8.543 ? for 48XX mod?

issues I have been noticing is things like if you have a smaller window open over an OpenGL CAD program and you move that window around it ghosts all over the screen, snd takes couple secconds to go away.

also some opengl programs seem to stick a bit, between operations.

I dont remember this happening with my HD2900XT mod

Max seems better however regarding artifacts.

Have not decided if this 4870 mod was worth it over 2900 since performance did not increase but some issues seems to have started, yet it does seem max might have less issues.

I now have a 5770, is there any possibility 5770 can be softmodded

I've got it modded from 3870x2 to v7700, too bad I can't do crossfire with them, otherwise, performance will be a blast.

    Thanks

CADCAT, did Wesley ever post a FirePro 8.633 modded driver for 3870 ?

puh, therefore I have to look, but I think yes.. I could upload the patched ati2mtag.sy_ so you can use the official driver.. And I think Crossfire Pro will only work with HD4xxx series, maybe only with some of them..

Hopefully I can upgrade my HD4870 to HD4890 this week and then do some new benchmarks ;)

but it seems tho that most of the specviewperf application are cpu limited, the 4xxx modded performance i see here are more or less the same as the ones I get with my 3870 mod.

Right but this has nothing to do with SPEC ViewPerf itself. It depends on the application.. e.g. when I turn on VBO (Vertex Buffer Objects) in CATIA I got a huge improvement over my old HD3870, when it is turned off the CPU does most of the work and limits the performance..

But ViewPerf is a bad benchmark, better is to do own tests, maybe ViewPerf 11 will be better..

Guys, did Wesley8's driver ever get updated for x64 apps? Did anyone else manage this? It's been a while since I've been on and it's proving difficult to catch up.

    Thanks

this is the definitly true for me, windows 64x i modded both the HD2900XT and 4870. No difference in max, or specview. Also I had serval issues with the 4870 after modding it. frames would stick between zooming, if you moved your CAD application window around it would not update quickly and ghost all over the screen. So I pulled the 4870 and intent to sell it.

No problems here with CATIA V5 and HD4870.. SPECView is only good to see if the mod is working, but not as performance indicator..

Later this day I will test my new HD4890 =)

    I am hoping there's a vista64 or win7-64 for my 3870x2 card.

Sorry but I don't think this will work, because crossfire pro is only for R7xx series..

But I can tell good news about HD4xxx series! Yesterday I crossfired a XFX HD4870 512MB and XFX HD4890 1024MB both running with modded 8.633 driver under XP X64! You only have to install CCC..

Both GPUs are working and performance increase is comparable to a regular crossfire combination..

So guys, for me (CATIA V5 user) everything is perfect now! Thanks again GellmaR and Wesley8 for your hard work!

Of course I will stay here and look for new drivers and maybe a HD5xxx mod when the Pro cards are out.. I also will make some Crossfire Pro benchmarks, but I have to get me a stronger PSU as I only have 425W..

    Greetings
