Technically the Essence STX has slightly better audio quality specs, but the Phoebus has a slightly newer audio processor (CMI8888) then the Essence STX (CMI8788). not sure what improvements the newer audio processor offers. Right now maybe go for a used Essence STX, $150.

Also the Xonar STX has replaceable op-amps sockets which the phoebus does not have which is one of the major differences. Other then phoebus having analog muiti channel outputs. Amazon tend to have Xonar STX's used for cheap.

Yes, which is why I recommended the Phoebus. Might aswell use his speakers also.

I said screw it and ordered a Xonar Essence STX.

I use headphones during gaming and definitely need something amplified. Been using on board. I've had to use powered headphones due to not being able to run the volume loud enough.

Can't wait to get my card. The last sound card I've ever owned was a sound blaster live.

Pretty excited to see the difference.

I just moved from years of 'onboard' with the lower spec Xonar D2X. You will not be disappointed my friend.

Incidentally, I seem to recall my last audio was a SB live card back in the day. I recall 'PC audio' being a bloody nightmare and I think that's what put me off until now tbh.
