XFX 6950 2GB Memory Bandwidth Issue?

    Update:

To begin with on my last board i had issue with the PSU. I had a 18 AWG cable on instead of a 15 AWG, then i had normal FPS in games.

Then i was worried about the 4x/8x lanes on my old board so i try with another PSU\MB(8x\8x). I had about the same results.

I bought 2x Sapphire just to make sure the XFX wasn't defective and they act the same with this PCI TEST about 500~ mb\sec.

Only game that I can't get over 50 FPS is Crysis Warhead. (1 card do 50fps alone) at 1920x1080 Gamer settings 4x msaa.

    3DMarks11: P7900

    Unigene Heaven Benchmark v2.1: 1920x1080 high 2xAA: 2101 - 83.4 FPS

    3DMarks Vantage 1.1: P23857

    3DMarks06: 1920x1080 Optimal texture 0msaa 0af Score: 19087

    1920x1080:

Lost Planet 2 bench level A, high setting D11: middle 0aa\0af

    91.9 FPS

Lost Planet 2 bench level A, high setting D11: high 2aa\0af

    72.4 FPS

    Dirt2: Everything Ultra 8xAA: 103.6 fps (1680x1050 108 FPS)

Call Of Pripyat Bench Preset Ultra D11 4xAA : 99~ avg

    Mafia 2 Bench: 16AF Maxed Phsyx off: 76 fps (1680x1050 75.9 fps)

    AVP D11 Bench: Very High,16xAF,Tessalation On,1xAA 106.3 FPS

So yah most of the bench seem normal.. except for low 3Dmark, might be because I use i7 860 stock.

For the PCI-E Speed issue i guess it's related to P55\X58 because no AMD users report low speed. P67 seem fine. (All the reviews site tested with X58 mostly so there no way to tell if there a impact or not)

Still doesn't make any sense to me that a 5870 get over 5gb/sec. Also don't understand how it can't impact the performance somehow.

So basically someone who bought a X58 with 16x/16x pci-e lanes wasted his money.. if the GPU > CPU cap at 500~800mb/sec on both platform.

Just weird nobody\review site didn't report that before.

Update: I'll grab 2x 6950 Sapphire tonight and share the results.

    Spec:
Asus P7P55D-E PRO (Latest Bios 1602)
    XFX 6950 2gb Crossfire
    i7 860 Intel
    Antec Quadro 1000W
    G.Skill F3-12800 9-9-9-24 2x2gb
    1TB WD Black
    Windows 7 64bits
    CCC 11.1

I had issue with my crossfire for 3 days now. Low FPS in games & bench.
    See: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2141824 & http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=338490

Someone pointed out a utility by AMD to check PCI-E Speed test. This test the CPU > GPU & GPU > CPU speed.

PCI-E Speed test Tool can be found on: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=225823

Unless this tools ain't working for 6950 card. I'm the luckiest guy ever that got 2 defective XFX 6950 or this is a issue with this batch\6950 XFX\Asus board. (I had terrible speed on MSI as well so i dunno about that)

I ran my test with only 1 XFX 6950 (both of them give me the same result) and my old XFX 5970.

Please ppl using XFX 6950 post you're result with spec. Would also be great to get result from someone with the same spec as me.

    Here the proof:

XFX 5870 test: You can see the GPU > CPU goes over 5,000 GB/sec

    6950 test: Here it's under 520 MB/sec .. Something obviously really wrong.

I Sure hope this tools ain't fubar on 6950 card .. Cause im seriously fed up of testing.

Cause there something really wrong here.. One other guy did the same test on a i7 970
    Crossfire XFX 6950's shaders unlocked
    MSI Big Bang
    12GB PNY XLR8
    Seasonic X650

and got the same result. (500mb/sec or so)

    Another guy here http://www.overclock.net/ati/938005-cf-6950-6970-flash-problem-4.html got over 5,000 gb/s with a 6950 Sapphire o/c i7 870.

So it ain't the tools or the chipset if that's right.

so you found another person with the same issue? That is great but what are you exactly trying to say? that there is a big defective batch of 6950s? Don't get mad because some people think critically so please hose the attitude..

Please include ALL of the information from each forum so people dont have to jump through hoops and click link upon link when you could have just summarized your experience for us. It is very lazy. I am trying to help you understand our forum etiquette as making people work harder to help you makes people just say **** it and move on.

It would be safe to assume that more than just xfx could possibly suffer from this issue since they just buy reference videocards and slap their logo on them.

fyi I spent about an hour and a half searching for your issue and all I could find is your posts. Perhaps you just got a few 6950's that were beat up in shipping. It happens all the time.

Looking over the results in the thread on XS, the only trend I see is that the multi GPU systems tend to have higher GPU->CPU bandwidth
Lightman tested this by disabling crossfire in CCC and his results dropped

my 6970 doesn't go over 900MB/sec with that test, but it runs fine in games
    [IMG]

    (Edit)
Just noticed the screenie reads my clock speeds incorrectly, perhaps the test is outdated now... *shrug*

You say you used a 5970 to check speed but in your gpuz it shows a 5870.........

I would be pretty shocked if this wasn't something to do with the fact the 69x0 cards are very different architecturally to all other recent AMD cards, and the benchmark utility just doesn't know how to deal with the 69x0 cards yet.

Although that could be an issue, I can't tell you it's the culprit. My CFX performs almost exactly like yours.

i think you need to stop blowing things outta proportion.

you say over 5000 gb/sec, the screenshot says over 5gb/sec. its nowhere near as big of a difference as you were claiming, but i'll admit, its a difference.

if you were gonna exaggerate, at least say its 'OVER 9000!'

It reads my clocks wrong as well.

I don't know what to make of this. Is the PCIe controller/interface on the 6900-series buggered up?

EDIT: Sever, the difference between 900MB/s and 5900MB/s is huuuuuuuuuuge, basically 6.5 times faster. Of course, you may just troll about the simple mistake he did by using gb instead of mb.

LOL Sometimes people use dots to make large numbers easy to read. So, one thousand, 1.000. One Million, 1.000.000. BUT, in this case, there be DECIMALS after the dot, not the rest of the number LOL.

    That reads as 5,270 GB/s NOT 5270 GB/s

This is too epic. OMG SERIOUS ISSUE = OMG I CANT READ NUMBERZ!!!1!

Nah, nothing wrong with your PCIe ports :) Probably a drivers thing. You should check for the most recent profiles...

FYI, i did the test in X48 system with my 2x6950(both sapphire), all seem good (Except a slightly lower score in 2nd 6950, nothing to worry)

definitely something isnt working OK.. but i doubt its the VGA.. . (have you tried it in a friend's rig?), more likely your pci-e connector (tried also to remove any dust from connector slot in motherboard?)

edit: also , i dont know if your overclocking can hamper the pci-e performance.. due to controller being native in cpu die..

The card act fine alone i'm having good result with FPS even 3dmark11, but in crossfire something seem just wrong with my FPS. I tested basically everything there was to test.

I presume if the PCI-E speed is slow it could affect crossfire performance.

Also notes it's been reported by a few ppl that 6950 XFX\Sapphire get over 5,000 GB/sec with those card.

    So there something fishy here.

    I tested my old 5870 and it's over 5,000 GB/sec with the 2x 6950 i got (trying them solo to) i can't get pass 550 mb/sec. Other user with 6950 did.

    Also tested on 2 motherboards.

Well if you're XFX show up over 5,000 GB/sec... i guess something is wrong with my 2 cards.

People with OpenCL ticked in GPU-Z seem to have lower scores, maybe it's just a program issue.
