You can have 2 active partitions in a system just fine, the boot order determines which is used.

The trouble mufflore is having is that when 10 touches the nvme with 7 on it, the file system is left in a dirty state.

    Ie; https://www.sevenforums.com/perform...win-7-boot-dual-boot-win7-win10-computer.html

However, if there is no fast startup / hibernate file on the nvme, it shouldn't be causing this.

@Mufflore you might not be able to disable the nvme in device management, but you should be able to remove the nvme's drive letters.

That would stop windows from mounting the volumes.

Yeah you describe the problem well.
I havent yet used the NVME drive in dual boot because I cannot disable it and dont want to go down the scandisk route again.
But I did a lot of trials using hard drives and SATA SSDs.

That thread describes my woes quite well.

I tried removing the drive letter but that didnt work.
This was using hard drives +SSDs, and I noticed something else...

I have a hard drive with my music on.
In Windows 10, when the computer was idle it would scan the new music hard drive, the noise of the drive was irritating.
I disabled the drive letter and rebooted into Win10 again.
(edit, I accidentally booted into Win7, it ran Scandisk on the drive before going back into Win10)
At idle it was still scanning the music drive, it had exactly the same sound signature as before! It would stop as soon as I moved the mouse, same as before.
And it still gave the problem running scandisk when booting on Windows 7.
This is how I found removing the drive letter doesnt help.

    Windows 10 is sneaky!

Not to worry, I'm going to keep 2 PCs running, its more convenient anyway.
