Would my system be a bottleneck for a GTX580?

    Hello everyone,

    Current specs:

    Win7 Home Premium x64
Intel Q9400 quad core running at 3.4 GHz
OCZ Reaper ddr2 memory running at 1100

Currently running a GTX 460 SE from MSI with no issues, but I recall one time I bought an 8800 GTX and found that my old system was not enough to make it shine. Don't want a repeat on that scenario.

So what say everyone? GTX580 too much for my system, or would it still run well anyway?

With your OC it should be ok, won't make it shine entirely, but it'll still be a solid upgrade in gpu demanding games.

test your gpu usage in games with msi afterburner

Should be OK. but you wont get full potential out of it.

I got a 480 in my qx9650(4ghz) rig and it is bottlenecked quite a bit. you will certainly not get the most out of that 580 but it will run ok I guess

Been running a 580oc in my bros q6600@3.2 pc and all is well. Probably holding it back a little like others have mentioned but that does not mean you will notice while gaming

1600 and above, those graphs seem to represent a gpu bottleneck, if some cpu limited games were posted, the fps would be all over the place according to the cpu. OP if you play a lot of gpu limited games you will be fine at higher resolutions, if you play a lot of cpu limited games your system will get much lower fps than an i5, i7 chip.

depends on the game you are playing. Most games that are optimized for the PC will run fine and will not experience much bottleneck.

Console ports however are totally different.. I have a gtx 580 and a core i5 2500k@4.0 and gtx580 is being bottlenecked big time(Skyrim for example)

with my 560ti and q6600 i only see bottlenecks in games with tons of npc's randomly placed throughout a game area such as assassins creed revelations (50-60% gpu usage) and same with skyrim, in battlefield 3 i get a solid 99% usage even on 64man maps

    i play at 1680x1050 resolution

Well, I had just bought a 27inch monitor, so I'm running everything at 1920x1080, regardless of the performance.
