I know this is probably a dumb question and am expecting I'll get the same answer I've already got in my head. But I want to kind of poll you guys and see what you think.
My parents computer is so clogged with this and that, that I need to do a clean wipe and re install windows. And I'm either going to put XP Pro back on it or a fresh copy of Win7. And I want to know from you guys based on the specs if you think Win7 would be even slightly faster, or just not worth it even to try.
Now, I've installed Win7 on old machines before with issues and without issues, but I just don't feel like it if it's not gonna do me any good to go through it.

Gonna back up old machine with ghost and then do an OEM install.

    Specs: lol
    Pentium4 2.8ghz
    2GB Ram
    ATI HD 2600 AGP

Well thanks for reading. I know in this age its kind of laughable, but it's my Parents old pc I built them ages ago. Just let me know what you think.

    Thanks in advance!

Na, don't spend money to go to Windows 7. It will run much slower than Windows XP. If they won't be upgrading their PC in another year then you can put Windows 8 on it at that time. It'll run better than Windows 7, hopefully. Plus, Windows 8 will be easier for them to use.

^^ I don't think it would run slower than XP - If you already have a copy of 7, stick it on, I say it would be an improvement - but not a big enough improvement to actually buy 7 for

I wouldn't bother "upgrading" to Win7 on a system that old....

Oh no, lol, no money involved. OEM disc and cert pre-activation involved

I was thinking it would make it a bit snappier for them, even though new windows is a RAM hog. I'm pretty sure the CPU won't be too slow.
I've been putting off doing a re-install just because they have so much stuff i'd have to install back on it lol.

Windows 7 has been proven to run better on low spec machines than XP anyway. Ive installed 7 on slower machines than yours and it was fine

    Vista was the resource hog.

At the end of the day, whats to lose? Only takes 30 mins max to install 7 on a machine that spec - if it runs like a dog install XP

Ha, don't forget about updates, updates, updates, and more updates. It takes hours more than that.

Ive personally ran Windows 7 on a P4 2.0 GHz "Northwood" with 1Gb ram and a FX5900XT and it ran decently on it. Mind you its not snappy but not slow either. (if you go into classic mode or basic aero its actually fast and responsive)

So your system should be fine.

XP has just as many updates, even if you start out with SP2 and have IE8 install, then a prepack of updates requiring no restart, then regular updates.

    Damn windows

    P.S.: Thanks guys!

Was just pointing out that it would take much more than 30 minutes including the updates. It's the most annoying thing to me of installing Windows.

Well of course it will, XP has had a lot more time on the market than Windows 7. :D

Unless you do netflix streaming, this 10x. Slap Gnome 3 on it, you're golden. :D

Does it have access to repositories like Ubuntu or Fedora? I may try it out in a virtual machine.

I just found a new desktop environment for my EeePC. I like the Mate environment in this Linux Mint. It's perfect for me and I like it better than KDE.
