As some of you know ive been running on a FX5200 LOL for a while.. but ive now been given a Winfast A400 (6800 AGP 128MB)

    Now.. thing is

When i play css on a busy server with my FX5200 My fps is 15 ish and with the 6800 its the same! Im guessing this is a CPU bottleneck?

If its not then whats going on?

I have unlocked 1 VP unit but unlocking the other PP to give me 16pipes instead of 12 gives me no end of artifacts in game so thats a shame :(

Anymore tips or tricks to get the best out of this card would be nice too ;)

Your CPU is one bottleneck, the atrociously low quantity of RAM you have is perhaps an even bigger one. The cheapest upgrade you can do is to get some more RAM if you can find any DDR1@333

I'm running a Sempron at that speed too, but I don't have THAT big bottleneck... Must be because mine's a Sempron 64.

Ok had a ram upgrade to 1gb DDR400 and its actually helped a little. FPS has gone up by about 5-10. Going to see if i can get a few more MHZ outta this cpu

YOu should be able to get to around 2.2ghz with that CPU. My mate had a 2600+ 462 and it was a decent clocker. It only has 256kb cache if I remeber correctly?

I cant even get it to 1.85.. pc posts fine but it dont detect my sata HDD correctly and so.. wont boot windows.

Seems the sata controller dont like the cpu running so fast

It may just require you to lock the ratios if it is possible on your board. Have you tried upping any voltages?

the mobo i have is not that good for overclocking

I have got the cpu up to 1.85Ghz atm

I can up the cpu volts by 10% so thats at 1.776 at the moment

I can change clk skew for a few things and fsb and thats it :(

Looks like your stuck mate, have you tried opening the 4 locked pipes on your GPU?

It's cpu bottleneck, nothing to do with that gpu.

Says guy who has played CSS with Socked A 2800+ Sempron, 1gb and A400GT 256mb.

Performance was about same with that system when it had Ti4200 128mb.

True. VIA chipsets have never exactly been OC friendly.
    @Nagasaki
I suppose you've reached about as far as your rig can go without a complete upgrade.

    Sure looks that way.

I have a AMD Athlon 64 SKT 939 CPU but no mobo for it.. keep looking tho as that will be a nice boost from this Sempron

Good luck finding a socket 939 motherboard.... compared to what you currently have, a Socket 754 Sempron 2600+ would be a big improvement.

Your's is a Socket 754 or AM2....his is a Socket A.....your's is faster than his, but it's actually slower than the original 32bit Socket 754 Sempron.

Your's runs on an 800mhz HyperTransport bus, his runs on a 333mhz FSB and is based on the AthlonXP's Barton core. Your's is based on a socket 754 Athlon64....can't remember the core name right now though.

One more thing.. when playing CSS, no matter if i have the graphics set for high @ 1440*900 or low @ 800*600 the more ppl that are on the server the worse my FPS gets, is that also a CPU Bottleneck?

CSS is very CPU limited from my experience. I had an nForce 3 motherboard (AGP + s939, kinda rare) so I got my 939 up to 2.8ghz. When my first 6800NU died I used a Geforce2GTS for a week, and after lowering the settings all the way down I was still able to get it locked at 100FPS and very stable (just ugly).

I recently upgraded from my 6800GT, which easily got 100FPS with nearly maxed out settings on my s939 chip. Your card shouldn't have a problem in CSS.

Try dropping your resolution, it may look bad, but if you're not at 30FPS even then you're not going to do that great.

Hmm ok. it just seems odd that with every person who joins the server my fps drops a bit so a server with 22 ppl in it i get 15-20 fps, if that server was empty i get 50+ fps.

Have you checked for lag at all?

What 939 CPU do you have?
