Windows 10’s latest version would be arriving on machines in the coming month. Codenamed Redstone 4, and possibly named Spring Creators Update, the update is moving towards stability. Its Insider builds have been separated from the active development of Windows 10.

Now, the insiders who earlier opted into ‘Skip Ahead’ and are still a part of it will receive Windows 10 Preview Builds under the RS_PRERELEASE branch, featuring the changes that may arrive with Redstone 5. Non-Skip Ahead users will get builds from the RS4_RELEASE branch.

Microsoft has released fresh Insider builds. Among the new features added is a new performance scheme called Ultimate Performance. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations users running Insider Build 17101 (rs4) or Build 17604 (rs5) can take the advantage of the new setting in Control Panel > Power Options.

As the name suggests, the power mode is designed for heavy-duty machines that can’t afford to cut down on performance during processing of extensive workloads. Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar said in the announcement post that they have been able to find areas in Windows where performance and efficiency trade-off is made and a collection of settings allows the system to adjust itself according to the user behavior, policy, and hardware.

“This new policy builds on the current High-Performance policy, and it goes a step further to eliminate micro-latencies associated with fine-grained power management techniques.”

It goes without saying that the new power policy would require the system to consume more power while exploiting the hardware to its fullest. That’s why Ultimate Performance won’t be available on battery-powered Windows 10 PCs. Both OEM’s and users would be able to select the power plan as per their will.

Maybe someone with this build can dump the reg key for this Ultimate power plan.
It would be interesting to see what they changed, looking into this in past Win10 builds, there not much you can tweak on HP ones.
Newer CPU can use newer features in power plans but still wonder if this is more marketing hype.

If they can do anything, there has to be h/w support backing it eg. Speedstep. They're full of crap.

Hahahaha, as long as Dona is the face of Insiders thing, I only see pure gambling. No realistic OS goals for a long time now.

I was thinking of setting VM for this but that article is little misleading, that power plan is only in one version "Windows 10 Pro for Workstations" and not other likw Win10 Pro, so most will never see this anyway.

    This ^^

There's nothing more Windows can do that your hardware can't already do even with default power plans, as CPUs will ramp up as and when requested by the game / software anyway, it's not like they're being throttled atm

Bored of MS now with their transparent advertising BS

Didn't we already put this to rest with game mode? And the fact that even running a VM of Windows 10 in the background while gaming does nothing to hinder performance?

I'm only sticking with Windows 10 for 3D paint preview anyway, if it wasn't for that I'd be back on Vista Home Basic

It should be called Ultimate Placebo Mode because that's what it is.
They should focus on more serious things. Like developing a new File Explorer and ditch this archaic atrocity that can't even remember files sorted by date.
Or unify their design and start applying their new design language everywhere and not just on their apps nobody is using.
Speaking of apps they could work on supporting more audio formats on their Movies & TV app, fix that horrible UI on Photos app.
Develop a Windows Search that does what its name says.
But yeah nope. Le'ts put some crap snake oil solution with a catchy name to show to the masses we are doing work.
And about Dona. Don't make me start with that woman....

Another joke to this clowns festival:

    - Game mode

    - Xbox DVR

    - The option to delete the collected user (sn´t it easier to give an option to don't collect them in the first place?)

    And now "Ultimate performance mode"

Until now the best gaming performance was reached disabling all this garbage, enable a custom high performance power plan AND disabling Chill/cool/power saving tricks in GPU drivers. (what is getting more difficult without apps like ClockBlocker (!!!) on some GPUs))

At one point in time i thought AMD (GPU) PR was the marketing BS sole king in PC but now MS is making a serious effort to be the top dog...

I just game on balanced and everything seems to clock up normally, never seen much or a point to run high-performance mode really

This appears to be intended to strip out resource usage that are not needed in the WORKSTATION space. For those who deny that OS scheduler changes, which are not available in the desktop Windows power plan cannot have a substantial impact on performance are being silly. We know for a fact it can. It's depressing how quickly nearly every thread devolves into noise.

I would love to use linux as a daily driver but there are still missing drivers (Sound BlasterX AE-5) and missing features like freesync over HDMI... there is always A LOT missing in every aspect of it and the linux community ignores that - they think its perfect while normal user can`t even slow down a mouse cursor like in Windows

What we really need is an "Unload all the s*** that isn't needed right now" mode. Heck, I would even pay £10 for it from the appstore.

To me it only makes sense if they will introduce new power plan settings.

There is HW support. Almost every person has CPU set up in way that clocks jump up and down as windows throws threads around from core to core.
It should put core into appropriate power state before doing so, and usually it does. But there is cost anyway, as there is L1 cache to be moved.

So maybe Windows 10 will finally have Linux like process assignment. (Wishful thinking.)

Then there is Throttlestop, which can keep Cores at max multi if user wants it. But it is always better to lock CPU at max multi in BIOS. (Eats considerably more power at idle.)
So I think that MS will likely replicate Throttlestop functionality.

    I posted this in RS4 thread;

what's different in ultimate power plan?
    Maybe post screen of parkcontrol.

I saw default High uses Frequency Scaling DC 5%, rest is at 100%, in bitsum's case this Frequency Scaling DC is disabled and set to 100%, rest also 100%.

Is this what ultimate power now does? If so, then its not very innovative xD
