If MS know about this problem, why is WU prompting me to install them again ?

Lots of people are also complaining about start button not working sometimes. And charms, too, for an unknown reason. Microsoft still have no idea about that. People have been restarting explorer.exe as a temporary solution for months. Another thing is the stucked taskbar in a full screen app and so on. WHO on earth tests these updates & patches I wonder? Ubisoft?

Actually I had to restart explorer yesterday to get my volume control icon back again

I have definitely restarted my PC more than twice since installing the Windows updates on Wednesday evening as I use my PC in the morning for an hour before I go to work and shut it down then turn it on again in the evening before shutting it down when I go to bed.

Maybe its full reboot that does it

They rush, clearly rush it. Windows 8 was really solid, stable and fast. The only complaint was "Hey where'z my damn start menu?!".. but now Microsoft community is full of rage topics. I know, no OS is perfect but read this news again, it's completely unacceptable. I'd keep Windows 8 until Threshold as it is still supported by Microsoft.

Guess they haven't had the time to pull them yet...

you can hide the update(s) from WU to prevent it from prompting for them permanently (they can be re-enabled too if necessary).

Yea just makes me wonder if it is as bad / widespread as people are making out, usually they pull bad updates immediately if it affects a lot of people

The BitLocker WP8.1 update was pulled 20 mins after being made live

I didn't have any issue with my laptop and desktop. Both very different chipsets and hardware.

Full reboot at least 3 times since the update ? (Not shutdown, actual reboot)

Still no issues. It works just like every other update for me. I suppose the update doesn't work quite well with certain hardware setups.

    Heard this fixes it by the way, it has something to do with system font cache;

Remove this file with a Windows Repair Disk or whatever -> c:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT
    SOURCE URL: http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsof...-2982791-and-kb-2970228-windows-update-248476

Then your system should be up and running again.

4 of my systems updated to the latest. Everything works fine. Pretty lucky I guess.

This should be stickied if true, and from the article it looks like a good few people say it does

You can but its a PITA, fastest way is to reset the machine while windows is loading a few times so it thinks its a failed boot

Used to be able to edit the BCD to add the legacy boot options but they blocked that with Update 1 it seems, at least it doesn't work for me any more

EDIT -- This was the best method that doesn't seem to work now
    ---

Enable Windows 8 safemode menu F8

    Command Prompt:

    Enable:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

    Disable:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard
