It shows 4GB RAM but it does not use 4GB RAM.
It uses ~3.5GB depending on PC, just like XP or Vista 32 bit does.
    Read what 32bit os is.

i must admit though it runs better on 3.5gb ram than my vista 64 bit does on 8gb ram but that is just me,like it and keeping it as my main O/S

i said it sees 4gb of ram read the post. Now it sees 4gb ram i expect it to run with 4gb ram. How can you prove that om only using round 3.5gb ram ? when OS sees 4gb ram ????

it uses 4GB RAM and more when it's 64bit.
yes, it can "see" there is 4GB installed, but 32bit architecture prevents it from using it fully.

acctualy its a CPU thing, a 32bit cpu can only use 4gb ram, hence 32bit
applications will also only use 4gb ram as the cpu only has the capacity to
handle 4GB. Usualy Windows's Kernel have 2GB reserved for itself, that
leaves 2GB for the rest of the OS. Videocard RAM and other stuff will use
of the space that the other 2GB is adressed at, and therefor you most likely
will never get to use the full 4GB in a 32bit OS. you might however get 3.5 to 3.8GB.

If you have a 64bit CPU on a 32bit OS, its still limited by the 32bit arcitecture
    of the OS.

Now i havent read that Windows 7 have gone through such a huge rewrite
that it now will suppor 4GB fully, it might be tho.. but i doubt it.

I may have written some stuff wrong here, but in essence, this is why..
    i think hehe :p

    edit:
That it allows you to see how much RAM your system has, does not
mean it can use it, its just info.

    edit2:
as for Windows 7, i just tested it in VMware, and it seems to work
like a charm, cant wait for the 64bit version of beta1 (7000 build)
im guessing its just around the corner.

that's actually not good since people may think it uses all ram and not move to 64bit os.
and industry need to move to 64bit and I think people need to know that 64bit not only lets you fully use 4GB or more of ram, but 64bit applications also run faster, 64bit os is more secure(global DEP and other technologies), 64bit applications can use more than 2GB of memory while 32bit applications are limited to using 2GB of memory and if they want more, it costs performance, plus it's much easier for developers to develop only for 64bit than for both. those and other reasons mean we need to move to 64bit os.

i know it wont use the full 8gb all im saying is it shows up as ive got 8gb installed, and yes it will only use about 3.5gb of it,but what im saying is it feels really nippy compared to vista 64

I'm on Vista x64 and would not trade it for anything else, especially not 32bit version.
It works so much better and faster, even with 32bit apps.

i agree with sunderland. quite the nice OS for being this early in development. It seems a touch faster than the Vista Ultimate x64 installation i'm currently running, and is quite nice to use with it's extra little UI features. Might install it as my primary OS later today.

Already using it as my primary OS.

It's as stable, if not moreso than Vista, faster install, a generally faster OS all together and i can see it straight away.

That's great to hear. I am waiting for official beta release, it should show up on Wednesday and hopefully there will be a 64bit version too plus public keys for everyone who wants to try it.

Build 7000 is the official Beta 1 release, although only in 32-bit at the moment.

32-bit OS's can only address 3.5 gb of ram. It'll show 4, but never be able to use 4.

zomb69: right now, the only place to get build 7000, or pretty much any build of Windows 7 is on bittorrent websites.

Well it addresses all 4 it's just that any MMIO adapters first. Technically if you ran your computer without any devices it would use the 4.0 totally.

I'm seriously tempted to try Windows 7, but I've got 1 question: can all vista drivers work fine with W7? I'm going for the 32bit version, anyways.

maybe this has been answered many times in the thread, but I've read though 5 pages and it's late here... :/
