Windows Event Collector and Windows Modules Installer are both set to Automatic and started. :(

So what now? Install from DVD on top of same OS and that should brind the original files and settings back? Then install SP1?

Do you still have pending critical updates other than SP1 not installed yet?

No, only SP1 is in the list.

Well, the only choice left if you don't want to retrace one backup after another via System Restore or don't have System Restore turned on at all is to do a reinstall.

As strange as this might sound, I actually hoped I had the same error as you guys experienced while installing SP1 so that I could help more about it. =b

In any case, sorry I couldn't be of any help.
I'm gonna look more into this type of error, but the fastest way would be to reinstall Windows.

Thanks for the help. But the question is if I do Upgrade install and it will copy back all the original files. Will windows update show me all the hot fixes or will it just tell me "install SP1" (that could fail again). That would suck.

I suspect there'd be some pre-requisite hotfixes before you can install SP1.
In any case, just install whatever Windows Update has ticked automatically for you first rather than manually add the unticked ones.

Been using these 'fancy' driver cleaners (Driver Sweeper, genetix & TwL) for around a year, still never had any Windows 7 reinstalls and SP1 installed just fine via Windows Update.
There are many other factors toward OS decay, including sloppy maintenance and/or careless program installs.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!! I fixed it. You will never guess in a million years. :)

I remembered I used "Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider" software long long time ago. The OS was left in "test mode" all this time. :bang: The software also removed the "Test mode" tag so I forgot all about it. As soon as I set it back to "Normal mode" and restarted, SP1 installed without a glitch.

    /me happy
Thank you for all your help guys. Maybe this info will also help others.

In my case the change that killed SP1 install was made more than a year ago. So Restore was never an option.

In my case the problem (sfc /scannow detected errors) were because I disabled driver sign on to try beta versions.

About the same as FDisk's problem then.

Make sense, though; this a driver-related forum after all.
Someone's bound to disable the driver signature thing because of 64-bit Windows.

...in which makes me wonder if all of the people who had reinstalled Windows 7 actually had the same problem but never really thought of it. =b

LOL, something strange after installing SP1.

Go to Device Manager, open the properties of any window.
Double click on your video card in Display adapters for example.
Now move your mouse pointer to the red X (close) button in the top right. (don't click).
The button goes insane. LOL, weird. :3eyes:

I actually had that kind of behavior before installing SP1; didn't really know what caused it.

It'd be funny if it turns out to be one of another after effects of installing certain version of Catalyst; maybe I'll try 11.1 and back to 11.2 just for kicks. =b

Hah, maybe. Did not see this before SP1. Or maybe I just didn't look that way. :D

    Nope, still blinking on 11.1.
Maybe it's really just a post-SP1 effect like you said.

Or maybe I'm just losing track of time whenever a deadline approaches. =b

Doh! I guess they just don't care for small bugs anymore.

10 year later someone will find that this was put there as some kind of backdoor trick for the government. If I turn out to be right in 10 years you all owe me a cookie. :)
