Microsoft is saying is that if you want the free upgrade you need to do it in the first year. After that time you will need to buy the upgrade just like you had to do with every other version of windo...

Windows 10 upgrade will not be free after one year

In 3rd world countries 1 licence for Windows 7 Home costs the same as Windows 8.1 /100 euros/, while the average salary in a big city is less then 500 euros.

So who in their right mind will buy a legit MS OS /government excluded/?

Here OEM W8.1 costs 150 Euro, non OEM (transferable) 250 Euro. Ratio between OS cost and salary is same here.

Nuh,after the first year best sales marketing plan would be 69Eu to 99Eu max for upgrade in my opinion. Seems like they need to take back more consumers.

    Romania: 110EUR for 8.1 Home.
    8.1 Pro, non-OEM is 250.

Average salary is all over the place. The average salary is 400EUR, but there are fields that start at that salary. That's the minimum salary for a programmer (and there are a lot of companies offering even more).

    But on average, same rates.

I got a bad feeling about all this free upgrade advertising.
Somehow i feel the downside will be, that they will fully bound OS to hardware. So you won't be able to activate Windows 10 as soon as you want switch to a new computer. Your "free" Windows 10 would not be portable to any new system. I hope i'm going to be wrong.

I think win xp 64 bit cost me £250, win7 "ultimate" cost me £100, win 8 was £20 using upgrade offer and now win10 is free.

At what point does Microsoft pay me to take their OS ?

Those 100~150 Euro versions are OEM, that means one PC and if you trash it, you should not reuse that OS on 2nd PC. It is M$ benevolence/error if they allow you to activate it 2nd time.

    Transferable license is 250+ Euro.

If Microsoft would just learn a vital lesson in which they brought down the price of their OS it would certainly help reduce piracy. An OS costing £50 would be worth the purchase for a large majority due to getting updates and not having to use dodgy scripts to bypass MS's copy protection but they continually charge an inflated fee that some people just can't justify.

Bring down the cost and you reduce your piracy is the key. I know there will always be the tight fisted "I hate Microsoft" brigade but a lower fee may just tempt them to put their hands in their pockets rather than run a dodgy script and having their bank accounts emptied overnight :)

i think everyone even the stupid person can see that microsoft trying to push windows10 usage
which first year user base/adoption rate = success rate
first year is more important to create impression how success a product is

its no brainer for windows8.1 user to not upgrade to win10
afterall they used to metroui, 10should even better
what is interesting how far this grab win7 user to move to win10

They have never enforced that 100% except o/s from oems like Dell,HP etc most of the time it's been fine if you bought an oem license and installed it on upgraded hardware as you went along. They were more concerned about not using it on more than one machine at a time.New features and better memory management etc. has been the driving force behind buying a new copy of windows up until now and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I just hope we'll be able to download the Windows 10 ISO separately and use our legitimate Win7/8.x key to install it directly

Unless there's a catch Microsoft haven't told us about, the only thing making me hesitant to upgrade directly is that I'll have to format everything YET AGAIN.

I don't really see what the big deal is. They have to profit from this somehow, and everyone who intends to make the upgrade is a pretty huge % of active Windows users. Those who are incapable of doing the free upgrade (basically, anyone willingly using Internet Explorer 6/7/8 on Windows XP) likely have no interest in upgrading anyway, and PC sales just haven't been as high as they used to be. So, MS probably realized that if they perpetually let W10 be a free upgrade, they're not going to break even. Therefore, their source of profit will be people who were "too lazy" to do the switch soon enough.

Remember too - they have to pay to maintain the servers that everyone is downloading the upgrades from.

I'm not advocating for MS here; I personally greatly dislike the company, and especially Windows. I just think that this move makes sense when looking in their perspective.

So what happens if you want to reinstall Windows (Windows 7 in my case) with the free upgrade if your OS gets FUBARed in the future? do you have to buy Windows 10 then?

Same thing you would have to do in a single license case of Windows 7. Contact Microsoft, explain the situation, work out a solution.

I think it is also funny that people are surprised by hearing this again, when Microsoft has only said this since they pretty much announced Windows 10.

I'm confident the upgrade process will go smoothly but, just in case, I certainly will make an image with AOMEI Backupper of my 8.1 install first.
