I don't have a problem with it either since it may help MS have less bugs with their new major updates. Look what Happened to 1809 and how long it took for it to be runnable for the rest of the people who haven't updated yet or couldn't update. Also it will take MS a while to get the update in a runable state and enable it under Windows update. Look how long it is taking users who are not in no hurry to update to the latest Win10 build. I am still on 1803 until MS decides it's going to update for me to 1809.

Not an over reaction but it just seems MS thinks everybody is PC illiterate and don't understand even the basics of drive space.

It's like saying, ok kids we need some storage space and because you are dumb we'll do it for you. Makes no sense to me why they would need this for updates and "stuff". 7gb is nothing but still feels something else is meant for that space.

I'm still waiting for 1809 as it's still not available for me other than a new install which i'm not willing to do just now. Still on 1803 and they still update 1803.

Upgraded to 1809 yesterday, after making a backup with Acronis :p

Apart from the usual resets of some stuff like soundblaster settings and disk defrag it went all smooth.

    I don't mind the 7 Gig, it's not a big deal.

It's not about the disk space as quantity, is about WHO decides what goes where. Another pointer of who really is in control of your computer. More and more i learn to exist in free software ecosystem and do my everyday computing ignoring Microsoft and their doing.

Those people are screwed no matter what. The 'solution' Microsoft has is for you to use a USB drive that it can use as temporary space..though it doesn't work half the time and even when it does, Windows update can easily end up taking 7-8 hours to complete.

Better solution: MS stop lying and saying that 20GB is the minimum requirement for Windows 10, we all know it is more like 40GB minimum just to function as expected, and for Dell/HP/others to stop selling those stupid 30GB eMMC netbooks that run Win10. At least make it 60GB.. 30GB was designed for ChromeOS, NOT Win10.

I got one of them for $100 that came with 1 year Office 365 (which is how I justified it, that alone is $70/year so $30 more for a 'toy' laptop seemed worth it). From Brand New, I uninstalled everything unnecessary, disabled hibernation, shrunk pagefile to nothing, then attempted the update..and it still failed due to lack of space. The USB thing took 4 tries before it worked, 8 hours later it was up to date with 2GB of space left. Not even enough to install Office that it came with. So instead I downloaded the latest version of Win10, and completely reinstalled. If I were an average joe with no OS installation experience I would have been screwed with a non-functioning product, since Win10 isn't exactly friendly about how it forces PC shutdowns for impossible-to-install updates.

But what now with endurance of SSD with TLC or QLC chips? We will buy SSD every 6 months or what?

1/142 of a typical HDD in a pre-made computer is nothing to get worked up over.

Yes, there are computers pre-made with 128gb SSD and 256GB SSD, even less on the really low end, but realistically 1TB HDDs, external or internal, are so cheap these days, anyone having issues with storage space really have nothing to complain about.

My Dads work PC has my old OCZ Vertex 120 GB from 2009, still has like 90% health.

SSD lifespan is a non issue for normal day work.

O yes it is.Your memory in VERTEX 120GB SSD is MLC not the QLC or TLC that I mentioned.I have too Intenso SSD 128GB from 2012.But I'am talking about cheaper SSD in 2019 with lower endurance memory type(QLC-4000 writes).

The fact that a partition or a file is reserved and steady, does not mean it is writing always in the same cells.
Total number of write operations will not change, is just that the file or partition will be reserved.

this is why I manual create the partions via the windows install CMD before picking my partion for windows installed on, so this crap dont happen. This how I been avoiding those extra Partions windows defualt installs makes speficly that system restore partion. I will just continue do this

My system OS drive (128gbSSD) has a EFI 100mb partion 16mb MSR partion, Remainder of space goes to GPT (OS) partion.

I never wanted the system restore partions nor will I never hence I setup my Partion via CMD in the isntall before actual installing So I sure I can aviod that partions this way too

Unless the do something akin to making that required or all updates and other function in windows dont work. which would be stupid cause it works just fine all this time with out such partion

We have all know this for long time The direct they been going with windows 10 kinda proves this too

There are actually quite a few systems on the market using 32GB eMMC for storage. Since the eMMC is soldered in place, you have to replace the entire system to upgrade storage.

"...we anticipate that reserved storage will start at about 7GB". START at! And, with what amount of GB it will end? With, like 700? I told you long ago - this is not a company, but a gang.

Article does not really say how it is done. Word like "Quota" is not used single times.
So, is space actually pre-allocated as some big file (like paging file)? Or is space free?

That makes really big difference. Especially when I see some comments here about SSD and that this is good.
Every GB of space which can't be written inevitably forces more data into remaining available space and puts extra strain on those data cells.

I second the notion of supporting option to put this partition on a separate drive

Considering they have no more good Q&A team they have been doing poorly on all fronts. The new 1809 version broke AirWatch for all of our provisioned laptops. Its been a month now and they still are doodling around. *internal screams* lol
This new provisioning i see as more of an advantage BUT considering how many people i have personally handled laptops for i can tell you you are going to have a margin of at least %30 that will be impacted a lot. (basing this on my personal experience). I have seen way too many laptops running Windows 10 on a very small SSD and thats because people do not wish to upgrade their current system or have no option to upgrade the SSD like some people have said.

I had 15gb free on system partition when windows started update and I needed to do clean install afterwards because it did not had space and had a lot of issues.
Problem with it is that you wont be able to choose on which drive you want to reserve that space. Problem is that windows will do half of the update and leave windows in bugged state if it runs out of space in the middle, most likely because update moved pagefile to system partition (even after clean install of 1809 I can't move pagefile from system partition). 7gb of an SSD for other partition means a lot more for additional space for then being reserved for bloatware.
MS needs to fix their update, not to search for workarounds that will not help in a long run anyway.

personally I rather it be pagefile of such used/made ONLY there is update, if it Partion I have huge issue with that, the only reason my SSD has over 10tb written to it simple cause how many TIMES i had to reinstall windows 10 dont have bigg drive for my OS it just big enough for the OS and few programs. I dotn want more space disappear cause now MS thinks another partion is needed.

Then again seeing I manual make partions VIA CMD prompt in windows install before actual install windows another partions wont bother me less they make the OS not install with out it.
