k
i had some space on my HD so i installed 2K (dual boot 98) to test it out. man, i've had some problem so far.
dunno y but my HD light is always on but i dun seem to hear it doin nethin though.
i found that 2K runs niceably slower than 98 did. i couldnt do many things at once like i could in 98. like when i was listenin mp3 with winamp, and i was copyin files from a cd to my HD, winamp started to skip and crack. just felt slower as i did many things simultaneously.
burnin on 2K is the worst part. i mean its not as good as in 98. i used to burn at 8X leavin it in the background while i do my other stuff like download, browsin, wordprocesin etc. now 2K isnt like that. i burn and as soon as i did somethin as simple as right click desktop, settin, advance to look at some settin, it buffered underun and killed my cd. i couldnt even burn mp3 straight to audio. had to convert it to wave first so Nero didnt have to decode it while burnin. i dun dare to open up ne program when burnin in 2K and its so annoyin to sit and wait for a burn.
the good thing i notice in 2K is that its memory handlin is damn good. i remember in 98 one day i had it on for so many hours with some IE opened, few Word and access2000 opened, and some other stuff, and it ran out of memory not allowin me to do a simple task like wordcount in Words2000. but duznt happen this way in 2K.

so my q's is

is it meant to be like that? like 2K isnt as fast as 98 but more stable and and duznt run out of memory as quickly as 98. or is my system (pIII550 256RAM) too slow for 2K? or am i missin nethin when installin? i did do a clean install again and installed SP2. i still wanna use 2K in future coz it looks better and wanna learn its networkin fuctions. so do u think buyin a better system like a PIII 1Gig will allow me to run it as good as i did with my current system in 98?
oh yeah, dunno if its meant to be like this, but with my crappy base model TNTII, 3DMark2001 scores 806 on 2K compare to 750 on 98. how come?
Win 2k is different. Usually a fresh install works. Make sure to get service packs. Well win2k is really windown nt5.

Windowns 2002 is WinNT 5.5 or 6.

  3. Yeah you will like Win2K if you did a fresh install. My advice....format C:

Yeah my 2k went like that after using norton utils in winME, it really effed everything !!

Had to fresh install, but did it on another partition,it works a dream except win2k takes ages to shutdown, havn't figured it out yet.

Advice. As above just fresh install on a clean hd, then get every update for it. 2k rocks, cant wait to see xp-pro

everything thats been said is cool, just be careful of one thing, Quicktime, Quicktime four is okay but do not under any circumstances install a version lower than 3.0.2 because u will not be able to shut down, i have seen this happen on an intel and my own amd machine, my advice when everything works fine create a disk image of it so that if things should go awol when u reinstall all your previous settings r still there

yeah i did a fresh install
well not really

u c after i formatted my HD, i couldnt find the option to boot from my cdrom (im not good with computer but tryin to learn). and i didnt know any other way to install the damn thing. i thought i could use a bootdisk and run setup from the 2k cd but it said somethin like 'this program cannot run in DOS' or somethin similar. so i installed 98 and straight away install 2k over it (no dual boot). i installed SP2 and all the 2k drivers for my hardware.

i been runnin the OS last few days and still dunno y the light for the HD is still constantly on. still, 2k is slower than 98 but i probably blame it on my slow processor. thats y burnin is still the shittest compare to 98 on my system. im not able to do nethin while burnin otherwise it buffer underun. damn annoyin. but besides that, i like it and gonna keep usin it. at least i know that i after i have my computer workin for few days that it will still run as fast as the first minute i booted it up. just have to keepin my hands of the mouse while burnin. games run fine, or maybe even better than 98. like in 98, counterstrike can still kill 2k when sometin like an icq pop ups durin a game (eventhough i thought 2k is uncrashable) and task manager cant do nethin bout it. maybe i just got a bad version of the game.

so my conclusion bout the OS on my slow system is for example:
i can have a game or programs runnin while burnin in 98 which i cant do in 2k
but after a few days runnin, i wont even be able to burn in 98 but i still can in 2k.
well thats from my experience, but im pretty new to computers so i dunno much so its probably not true in general

oh yeah, can neone tell me how to select the boot sequence from my BIOS? i dunno whats my BIOS is called but it from my ASUS P3BF M/B.
Alright Godzilla, from what I can acertain you need to install windows 2K without having to bother with Windows 98, but first a little story. I had the same problem, my pc was pretty crap under windows 2k because i had to install win 98 first to get the system to start up. Once I had worked a way around the problem My computer ran like dream and I haven't had a crash (bar individual applications) since. All the problems I had with Win98 are gone and I can do alot more stuff, plus the computer now shuts down properly...

Now how to do it:
First check your devices on the Hardware Compatability List at www.microsoft.com, this is important as you may need to upgrade certain periherals or update drivers. Check the website of your motherboard for tips on how to save and flash the bios, read these points very carefully!!!!

load up windows and out in your win 2k cd, explore it and find out if there is a command called MAKEBOOT.EXE, if it's there expand the file onto four floppy disks following the prompts. This only works if you have the full CD edition, If you have a copy or an upgrade CD then the makedisk.exe file may not be there. To get around this you can find the command that says winnt.exe or win32.exe write down the path and then shut down into DOS mode, type in the command line and follow the on screen instructions.

If you are not using and Upgrade disk!
Partition and format your hard drives using FDISK as usual if you are NOT using an upgrade disk and insert each floppy disk in order at boot up sequence, follow the onscreen instructions.

Because of your experience I wouldn't convert the drives to NTFS (New Technology File System) yet because reversing the process is tricky for a new user.

The system should be up and running and should be pretty stable, if you have any problems post me on the forum, good like bro!
ee92as i think i knocked 30seconds from my boot by adding my own ip address. go here and it will explain www.dslreports.com you want to check out the faq and the stalls and freezes question.
k, i just installed 2K again just like how urotsukodoji said, make 4 bootdisk, format comp and installed 2K, SP2 and all hardware drivers for 2K. i havent tried burnin yet to c if the performance is better but i think it'll be the same. the HD light is still on all the time, even though i cant seem to hear my HD writin nethin.
but some weird crap as im writin this reply. i cant seem to access nething on my computer. i tried clickin MY COMPUTER, IE, some desktop icon and nuthin happens. somethin buggy is goin on. when i rite click the desktop, this box comes up with the headin 'Control Panel' Access to the specific, device, path, file is denied. whats that. it wasnt like this a few minutes ago. im managin to open up IE by rite clickin a link on my aready opened up IE window and click on open link in another window. i only have one account which is under group ADMINISTRATOR so i shouldnt be locked out from everythin. neway, hopefully this weird thing goes away after i restart my comp. man, so annoyin. everytin i try to run comes up with this command sayin 'unable to run this command'. did i do somethin wrong. but i havent touched nethin. neway, gonna reboot now.

well im usin a logitech cordless wheel mouse but i never installed the mouseware 9.1 that came with it. didnt needed to coz i only wanted the standard mouse function.
other things i've updated is video card, soundcard. windows pretty much identified my cdroms etc...
that stupid buggy thing that happened b4 which wouldnt let me open up nethin gone away. i rebooted 3 times and it still happened. then it went normal on the 4th reboot just when i was gonna format the damn comp again.
is there ne good audio ripping program which runs on 2k? i used to use xing audio catalyst on 98 but i dun think it works properly with 2k. it says i get a lot of speed problems.

YOU GUYS ARE ALL FORMAT HAPPY, A FORMAT SHOULD ALWAYS BE ONE OF THE
LAST RESULTS I SAY SOMETHING IS TAKEING UP YOUR RAM TRY TO FIND OUT WHAT IN WINDOWS TRY CLOSING ALL PROGRAMS EXCEPT EXPLOROR AND
SYSTRAY AND SEE IF THAT FREES UP SOME RAM IF IT DOES THAN SOMETHING
YOUR RUNNING (MAY BE IN STARTUP FOLDER) IS TAKING UP YOUR SPACE IF THIS DOES NOT WORK THAN IT MAY BE SOMETHING RUNNING IN THE BACK GROUND
OR EVER A WORM VIRUS (A VIRUS THAT USES UP YOU RESORCES) THEIR ARE PROGRAMS YOU CAN GET TO LOOK FOR BACKGROUND PROGRAMS IF ALL ELSE FAILS ........FORMAT
