Well to Start everything off, I'm new here so hello. =) I'm also very new to "building" computers, that is if I can call this that.

Here is what I'm working will:

Stock Computer: HP Pavilion a1740n Desktop PC

    CPU: E6300

Motherboard: ASUSTec Computer Inc. Leonite 5.00
    MB Chipset: Intel i945p/pl/g/gz rev.a2
    Southbridge: Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) Rev. a1
    LPCIO: Fintek F8000

    Bios: Phoenix Technologies, ltd
    Version: 5.23
    Date: 10/30/2007

    GPU: PNY GTX 650ti

    Power Supply: No brand 350watt

    Ram: 4GB ddr2

    Hard Drive: 500gb 2.5" 5400rpm

    OS: Vista 64bit

What I'm trying to do is upgrade to a Q6600. When the E6300 is in the motherboard everything works just fine. After installing the Q6600, the computer will power up, run all of the fans and the bios never loads.

I have looked around online for a little bit and I can't seem to fine anything I can understand =)

I would like to know if this can be done at all with that I got.

So after looking some more I found what looks like bad news...

    Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
    Core 2 Duo E6x00
    Core 2 Duo E4x00
    Pentium D 9x0 Dual Core
    Pentium D 8xx Dual Core
    Pentium 4 6x1 series
    Celeron D 3xx series

So It from what it looks like I cant use it, right?

If I can't use it with this motherboard, could I get a 755 motherboard cheap?

Or is there a way to re flash the motherboard I have so it will work with the Q6600 and allow me to over clock it a little?

Have you tried resetting and / or updating the BIOS? Maybe the mainboard does support it, yet needs a firmware upgrade to do so.

Unfortunately those OEM boards aren't allways the richest on the features and support...

If you really can't get it to run with your mainboard, I think your best bet would be to search for a used one, yes. My 775 board is still in use, can't give it away sorry :)

edit: You're probably out of luck with your board, I don't think it will support a quad core due to OEM typical lack of (bios) updates.

Microcode is usually locked down on OEM motherboards, it would be pretty simple to find an LGA775 online for cheap if you have th funds. :D
