can anyone tell me why this is the case. always i have seen newer is more expensive and not other way round. but i know some cards memory and power wise the price will vary!

9600GT is considered a mid range card, 8800GT is a high end card

wait for 9800GTX/GX2 to se $400-500 range

the thousand digit is generation,.. the hudredth digit is the performance level

    for example:

    6"6"00,7"6"00,8"6"00,9"6"00 are midrange spec/class.

    6"8"00,7"8/9"00,8"8"00,9"8"00 are high end spec/class.

because if it were more expensive then it wouldnt be the 9600 but the 9800 lol

One way to look at it:
    G92 8800GTS = 128SP
    G92 8800GT = 112SP
    G94 9600GT = 64SP

but those 64sp are almost as powerful as old 8800gts with 96 sp, so u can't look it that way, cuz they're more advanced and sophisticated than those found in all other 8series gpus...
i only hope that the new 9800gtx will also have the same SP but 128 so you can imagine its power and all it needs to have is a 512bit mem bus, 20 or more ROPs and we have a winner lol.

i think it make sense to push the 9600 out of the door 1st before 9800. look at the 8000 series, where 8800 gts/gtx were getting splendid review.... the comes 8600/8500 everyone just be able to compare how much slower it was comparing to its same-gen sibling.
nevertheless, if 9600 is really more powerful than 8800gts, this doesn't mean 9800 will have big performance advantage again.

It's most likely due to the fact that the 9600 GT (still a G92 chip) could not pass as an 8800 GT and so it becomes cost effective to disable some of the shader processors and so forth so they can sell it rather than discard it. No clue as why they called it a 9600 GT instead of an 8700 GT.

I'm sorry but I had to post a reply to say posts like this make me first feel sorry for the ignorant and laugh at stupidity when ignorance shouldn't be with all the information available to any person with a proper working brain.

I don't quite understand what your saying. What does the G80 8800GTS have to do with anything?
The question was why the 9600GT is cheaper than the 8800GT.
9600GT has 64SP but is clocked higher.
8800GT has 112SP and higher performance.
The old 8000 series cards are: 8800-G80+(ultra), G80(GTX,GTS),8600-G84(GTS, GT), 8500-G86(GT)

    G92-8800GTS, 8800GT, 8800GS
    G94-9600GT

OMFG... As far as I know they are obviously different size, they have different amount of transistor and G94 (9600GT) is even rotated to 45 degree angle on pcb. So they are different chips and there is possibility that 9600GT shaders are advanced than 8800GT, atleast lil more optimized because the 9600Gt chip is newer.

If there is some not working shaders on the chip, u cant literally cut them off and that way reduce the area of chip.

learn to google before stating **** facts.
    "
But even at that frequency, the raw processing power of this G94 is still a full 38% lower than that of the 8800 GT.
the G94 has only 505 million transistors, or 33% fewer than the G92, and it has a surface area we measured at 225 mm2, or 31% smaller, despite the same engraving depth (65 nm).

just make it simple dude... the answer is so simply, why it sell cheaper than 8800GT because nVidia plans to make it cheaper and for the god sake... why do we discuss this thing??? :)

I already think it is too expensive as it is. You can buy an overclocked 8800GT for $220, while an overclocked 9600GT costs $200-$210, and is MUCH worse than the 5% price difference.

in the UK the cheapest I can find an 8800GT is £130 but yet I can get a 9600GT for £100. I also noticed that you specificied overclocked 8800GT... you are aware that you can overclock a 9600GT? They overclock like chuff actually. I don't see the point in buying a pre overclocked graphics card unless it has something special about it ie better ram or a better cooler.

you're entirely wrong. the 9600GT uses a G94 core, which has fewer transistors, and the die size is completely smaller than the G92. Since it's a smaller chip, it's cheaper to produce and manufacture.
