I have an MSI R9 290 Gaming and I would like to try some R9 390 BIOS.

The card has a BIOS switch and it is currently on BIOS #2 and it works great.
(BIOS 1 also works and POST fine but Black screens when loading windows with installed graphics driver for some reason(it loads fine without graphics driver).

GPU-Z says the ASUC Quality is 78.9% and the memory is from Hynix.

I also put a custom cooler in it (Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV) + VRM heatsinks.

I want to try an R9 390 BIOS but the only one I can find is for the R9 390X 8GB.

Also I have another graphics card laying around so I am not too worried if it ended up bricking the card.

    Why would you want that?

Quite common. I did it with 7970 to 280X on couple of cards, works. 290 to 390 should work too. Not that you get anything with it...

I would just oc the card and be done. Drivers should deliver the same performance for both cards in the future. And since the r9 200 series will be phased out, i doubt amd would do some dirty tricks to make the r9 300 series look better. Look at the 7970 and 280x. Oc the first and you have the performance of the latter.

Well no luck getting the 390x bios to work on my 290 non x, my 290 also cant be unlocked to the 290x :(

So im waiting to try 390 non x bios :)

You may ask why to do this, well from what i read is the 390x performs better due to the drivers have some setting to increase performance due to optimization and if amd does not let these work on the r9 290/290x then installing the bios will help it perform better.

Also this has been proven to work on other cards for example the GTX 680 was able to be upgraded to a GTX 770 witch increased the performance and also gave user the benefit of GPU boost 2.0.

Hopefully the 390 biso work on my 290 and hopefully someone mods them to set the ram limit to 4GB and lower the memory speed :)
