I like ati's new hd4*** series.. I think that it is the best series since their 9*** series. However I am a freebsd fan and ultimately want to run freebsd with native 3d support. How long away are the drivers? Thankyou :infinity:
Unfortunately ATI does not support FreeBSD, if you had a NVIDIA card http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html So I don't think ATI will every develop a driver for FreeBSD.
Haven't tried my HD4850 on FreeBSD yet (will wait with a new FreeBSD install untill 8 and KDE 4.3), but there are open source X.org drivers for it. Better ask on a FreeBSD maillinglist or forum for a definitive answer.
Official ATi drivers for BSD: probably might not happen Open source video drivers probably exist...google is your friend
If the xorg radeon driver works on BSD you're in luck, lots of development going on there. But do not expect any performance miracles...
