    Hello everyone,

Could do with a little advice. Want to update my computer but not sure where to start. My specs are.

    Asus Rampage 2
    i7 930 (Stock)
    Hd 5970
    Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775
    8 gigs off ram

When i play games such as, Witcher 2 or Oblivion and the fps drops below 60, i get terrible lag or stutter, many of my games have the same problem.

Have a budget of 600 euros every six months, where should i start.

    Thanks for any advice.

I would go for a video card. Then replace the keyboard. Should increase your FPS by at least 15-20.

What resolution do you play at? Do you overclock the cpu? What speed is your memory?

Yeah. Keyboard? I never heard of doing that for any kind of increase when gaming.

The keyboard? Lol. I'd overclock the 930 and replace the stock cooler if you've still got that in your PC. Next thing would be GPU, with 600 euros you can easily get a high performance card.

What about the lag, anything below 60 fps and it is very obvious.

None, the lag sounds like a configuration issue. Games like Oblivion, especially Oblivion since it's very old should NOT lag.

Go back and retweak the system, ensure you have the latest drivers. Personally, every time I start up a game, I go to the Control Panel and set the Power Options to High Performance because some games won't push the CPU to get out of its idle speed (at least from what I've noticed), so maybe this could be your problem as well.

    lol... keyboard...

there sounds like there is an issue with either your cpu or your vga not coming out of idle. a 5970 is a VERY powerful graphics card and your cpu is still top notch. you shouldnt be experiencing anything remotely like this on your setup.

run a game alongside cpu-z and gpu-z and realtemp, see what clocks your cpu/vga are at. see how much memory is being taken on your vga, and record it. if its not full clocks, something is wrong.

Not sure if this helps but when I first bought my PC. It had a terrible start problem, could take up to 10 times to start and then at times would crash.

But found out that when Im not gaming, if I was to put the medium power saving mode on the epu-6 engine (Asus software) and keep it on, then those problems disappeared. And so now only have high performance mode on when gaming.

Sounds like there's a problem with your build and doesn't seem to be GPU related.

Won't fix a damn thing if you upgrade the GPU, now we need to dissect the issue on the mobo/RAM/CPU level.

Maybe there is a problem with said build either you take it back or have to diagnose it yourself tbh. Make sure that everything is seated properly as well. Best is to take the machine apart by yourself and reassemble it.

Clean install, no crapware, fresh latest drivers.

Grab an all-in-one water cooler, slap it on, OC to at least 3.5 ghz [to make it worth replacing the stock cooler].

    Otherwise leave things alone.

If anything, 1st item to upgrade would be the video card, but you should be fine with what you have unless you're hungry for the best.

Even so, it's not worth upgrading video for "the best available right now", with next gen so close to coming out.

Just so you know did what you said and changed the power options in control panel to high performance and seem to be getting at least an extra 10 fps from balanced mode cheers.

Will try the memory check, cpu etc soon.

Oblivion should lag. Its normal. It is a very cpu limited game(likes high clock speeds) and does not work well with crossfire. Also, i checked on my 2600k and the game likes to run on my HT threads instead of the actual cores. Setting affinity to my 4 cores fixes majority of low fps.
