Title. PC is certainly more sluggish then when I first built it. What programs do you recommend to possibly help this?

The ones mentioned here are all excellent tools, but remember that they are, after all, just tools! The best way to keep you computer clean is to use it with care!

    I'll add:
    HiJackthis,
    cwsshredder,
    WinDirStat,
    Remove Hotfix Backups,
    and Windows Install Clean Up.

All are available at majorgeeks :)

Just to remind people the thread is called "What free programs do you use to keep your PC running smooth?"

    EasyCleaner

    ERUNT/NTREGOPT

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx

VM will not make your system run better but it will help prevent it decaying in the first place, use the VM for testing and trying software instead of installing it on the real system.

No your right, maybe this is because it is not free. But to be honest i almost posted it first, lol. ;)

People you may just have missed it but free seems to be one of the requirements here. So please don't keep posting application which are not free. Also, and it is just a suggestion, but shouldn't we try to list something not already listed, don't it seem more useful ? I think we know about Ccleaner by now don't you ? But im happy to have 15 posts all with Ccleaner in them, it is after all one of the best around, it just seems a bit funny that's all.

Is the JKDfrag better than the stock defrag tool in XP?

Yes i would say it's better, but then most defragmenters are. Not that the build-in defragger in XP is bad it is a stripped down version of Diskeeper MS licensed from Executive (some old version can't say exactly what version it's based on. Don't know about the one in Vista come to think of it). But it has no customization of placement strategies and is not as thorough. Also it don't handle defrags well when low on disk space.

JkDefrag is open source made by one guy, the GUI (graphic user interface) version i linked to is made by another guy and also includes Pagedefrag from sysinternals/now MS.

    JkDefrag
    http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

JkDefrag is very feature rich when it comes to placement strategies. It can do many different file placement strategies, many more then what most defraggers can. Not Diskeeper, PerfectDisk, O&O defrag or UltimateDefrag can do "sort files by size" or by "creation time". Im not sure which other defragger can actually. Im not saying that file placement strategy is everything, or that JkDefrag is perfect, it has it's own flaws like most do. One major thing missing is the support for the Layout.ini use by XP to do file placement strategy. But this is done just by Start > Run > type cmd hit enter > type defrag c: -b wait for the prompt with the cursor to appear again.

lets not forget he's on vista x64 when you recommend your apps.

personally i think Antivirus and antispy products slow the system down more than anything else. vista is pretty secure on its own. but depends on what you prefer.

i really like Tweak VI. theres a free edtition and a $$ one with more features, i got the Ultra and love it.

Ok i get it you can't see the OS part of the specs when using the normal skin ;)

But really it should always be posted what OS is used when asking for help or whatever.
