Im bored and trying to figure out other things to do in my spare time while sitting at my desk.

This might be in the wrong section so move it if ya like! Could be a cool on going thread if it gets to that.

For those of you with six core chips and I7 extremes as well as 8 - 12 gigs of ram.

WHAT DO YOU USE ALL THAT HARDWARE TO DO??

Post some screen shots... ( NO GAMING )

Only thing memory and cpu based that i have really done was BRYCE..

For me, with 8GB, it's mainly for running multiple virtual machines for my computer security program I'm doing.

in my case, i do some video editing and a lot of encoding so the extra ram and processing power comes in useful. it helps the program run more efficiently so i can preview in real time without having to pre-render the workspace.

its also useful for multitasking and gaming as multigpu setups generally require more cpu power to operate more efficiently.

No, testing firewalls, system penetration tests and etc.

Here's a screenshot, not much going on, but just by booting the systems, it eats 72% of my RAM:

I didn't use an IMG tag since the screenshot is too big for forums.

Computer security program as in that's the program/field I'm studying in college.

You need to have a dedicated PC and run Zen Server :) Awesome!

I just like it, I'm probably going to buy a GTX580 soon and maybe another 6gb of RAM for a laugh...

mine isn't really top of the line but it serves me well in multitasking:)
    i use it for:
*video encoding on avg 8-9gb file to ~200-260mb file (4000bit) it needs ~3-5min, this eats up almost all cpu resources 85-95%, but i can still listen to music and surf the web, use word, etc..the only bottleneck is disk -_-, if i use it to much it can slower the whole thing and cpu usage drops because there is to much I/O ops lol..:pc1:.

*audio production - this new reason5.01 takes full advantage of a quad core which is nice and it makes it super fast too, compared to old Rsn4 it opens in a snap:nerd:

    *sometimes photshop

    and yea for games! :D

I love building pcs, i prob hardly use my hardware, anywhere near what it should be used at.

Mainly Msn and forums, sorry if it pees anyone off, but just coz i got reasonable hardware, you cant make me use it.

want to buy me new hardware man? I'm like out of cash for a dedicated system lol for 'em.

Xen is good, but not for what I do though. It's really better for running VMs in the background not so much VMs that you constantly use locally, they tend to lang due to the interface using VNC.

Yeah, I have a friend who has bleeding edge hardware ( LGA 1366, ROG mobo, watercooling and a GTX 480) But does'nt play games nor does he have any demanding tasks to take advantage of what he has..He just likes to overclock and bench. Rich guy though so I dont see any problem if benching makes him happy

As for me, I was quite happy with my e8400 till I started bringing work home and started using sketchup + v-ray.. I needed the boost in rendering power to I upgraded to a Core i7 :) Im really satisfied with the increase in performance :)

When I lived in Sydney I used to ride my motorbike and wondered what went on in all those little no-name buildings that lined streets.
Reading your posts is like getting the answers.
I play a lot and surf a little, but I prefer to build.

at one point in time, i used premiere, but then i found it annoying to use.

now i use sony vegas. its a lot easier imo. you just highlight a section. ctrl c ctrl v. adjust the length, etc. everything's easier. latest version supports gpu accelerated encoding too which is useful. its also a fraction of the price of premiere. vegas is around $50-100AU depending on which version you get whereas occasionally i see premiere going over $1000AU.

    https://store3.adobe.com/cfusion/st...lications/PremierePro&distributionMethod=FULL

premiere pro is $1333 from the adobe store. not worth it given that sony vegas can do everything premiere can do from a fraction of the price.

Only reason i have a i7 rig now is because i got some sweet deals on some used parts! I got my i7 860 and my P55-UD6 for a little over $300 together, which at the time i built it, meant i saved enough that i could have bought a second 860. Honestly with a decent OC its more power than i've needed for most games. I would have had a Phenom II X6 build if ASUS wouldn't have screwed the BIOS over on my old board.
