Hi fellas. Reading some rewies of the newly arrive socket 2011 of the intel, i encounterd the term of creating a Ram Disk, with your Ram. And read that it would be like to have a SSD with 2 Turbochargers nerd. Thw new intel secket can ofer up to 8 Ram socket for quad channel, and suposing you install 8pieces of RAM (8 per/piecs) you end up with 64GB of RAM. So the reall benefit here is to create a RAM disk. So how can this be done, and what use can you make of it (can you install Windows for Example??????)????????? thnx
i used it once to try it out. and the software i believe was called just that, ramdisk. not sure if you can install OS on it but i doubt it.
You can create a ramdisk using a 3rd party tool; you cant install windows on a ramdisk because ram is violatile, meaning it purges all data in its contents upon a restart/shutdown. I dont see much point in ramdisks but maybe its because i have a few SSDs
The only thing ramdisks are used form in real life is putting very important small size databases. Home use is pretty useless, but for companies, putting their email database on a 1-2 terabyte ramdisk is HUGELY important. I worked , until 2 months ago, in a company which did just that, supplied NON volatile ramdisks to companys, in huge sizes. The speeds...well...SSD's arent even close http://www.kaminario.com/ I feel no qualms about plugging them now I dont work there any more, but its impressive tech none the less.
Well lets suppose that one day we can afford that much of a system (with 64Gb) , what can i use the ram disk in every day use (expect from saving emails...hahahaha)?????????
for anything u want i believe the ramdisk software has an option that will create an image of whatever u have on the ramdisk and boot that image when windows loads. the drawback is your shut downs take a little longer cause it needs to create the image.

I use mine to put half of Skyrim's files, with a lil tampering with soft links it loads the meshes and voices from the HDD, and textures and other stuff from the ramdisk. When i get 16Gb im going to store all of Skyrim there and see how better loading times get (not that i care too much since it loads pretty fast already but its fun to mess around with those things ). Im expecting a big improvement by having the main .esm loaded from ram, something i cant do now as it needs the rest of the game around it (that would be inside the ramdisk) to work properly and it would take ages to link everything back and forth.
