I'm confused as to what driver I should install for a 7970. I was about to use AMD Catalyst™ 12.2 Preview driver Version 12.2, but there's a big red sign on the AMD website that says :

Please note that AMD Radeon HD™ 7900 users should keep using the 8.921.2 RC11 driver found here (the 12.2 preview does not support the AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series): http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/RC11Driver.aspx

Please fill me in on what I have missed, whats the consensus on the 7970 driver to use.

I've tried driver revision 8.921, 8.930 and 8.950 for HD7970. You should try the latest CAT 12.3 RC version, its the 8.950 rev. Or you can just use the 8.921 which is the CAT 11.12 official "hot fixed" driver on the disc that came with HD7970. Neither is any good in my opinion, but newer is better? right? :nerd:

I've heard their are issues with latest beta build going around with the 7 series where the PCI_E lane get locked at x1.

That's the same buggy "patchwork" driver that's on the sapphire and powercolor and gigabyte cd's. It's horribly broken...the card will shut down just by opening a fullscreen command prompt. The core files aren't meant for the hd 7970 so the card just goes into power down mode (gpu-z causes this instantly too).

Using RC11. It's the most stable based on my testing.

i`m also using the sapphire driver 8.921.5 and it seems ok so far. 12.3 was horrible at all. i just tested this set in mw3 and was forced to see a dia-show.
before the 12.3 i had the 8.921.2 installed which also seemed to be stable for me. but the 8.921.5 should be a newer release right? so i`m ok with them and perfomance seems to match the level of the 8.921.2 didn`t really test bf3 and skyrim, but gonna check it right now ;)

I wonder why there's no driver updates for 7950/7970 yet.. Still using the release date RC11.

As they are not going to start supporting them until sometime in March.

based on the leaks, they probably want to have a stable set release (with CF) for xp32, xp64, vista/7 32, vista/7 64, & maybe even win8? (is there some new win8 beta coming up in a couple weeks?)

as for ending up in march, that would be the WHQL driver, which probably will be built in late feb, so i would expect another RC release soon
