Looks like the majority of gamers here don't remember the early nineties. This is quite surprising.

Shadow of the Beast - (AMIGA) Amazing 8 layers parallax scrolling and beautiful graphics.

Another World - (AMIGA) Innovative vector graphics and great cinematic cutscenes using the game engine.

Quake 2 - (PC) The first "real" 3D game i played on hardware acceleration (TNT2). Maybe not the best, even for its time but i was amazed back then.

I dare say that's because they were born in the early 90s. :)

The earliest I got with a WOW factor or NOT is Grandstands "ASTRO WARS" LoL. Stilled boxed from 1981 awesome, minutes of fun to be had by all. S**t I used to be so good at this.

gran turismo on the original playstation was amazing -- car reflections! shadows!
return to the forbidden forest on the commodore 64 -- anyone remember this?! it was so colorful and gory for the time.
quake 1 - it was so nice to see monsters that weren't flat sprites and you could actually walk around them. i'll add quake 3 arena here - stunning environments for the time, all those lovely architectural curves

Now that you say, it could be 16 or more. Either way it was a spectacular achievement at the 16 bit era.
