Western Digital introduces three different new 22TB HDDs. All of the HDDs use conventional perpendicular magnetic recording, or cmr. The 7200rpm drives will all come in 3.5 format, a SATA connection, ... Western Digital has begun distributing new 22TB hard drives.
Buying such huge HDDs would definitely increase my anxiety levels. Loosing a terabyte is bad. Loosing 22TBs would be disastrous.
Fair play to WD, fair play. I got a nice 6TB/256MB 'Black' on my rig, and before that I think I have always had WD drives. I guess, in a time where everything is flash, it's nice to know WD are still seeing what can be achieved with mechanical.
You mean this... "Western Digital's industry-leading Ultrastar 22 TB CMR HDDs and 26 TB UltraSMR HDDs began shipping" Looks to me like an extra 4TB using SMR
It's not for the same use, mean the CMR stop at 22Tb and the uSMR at 26Tb. CMR generaly eat more energy and are more versatile, SMR (or uSMR) are more energy friendly but if they are filled with lot of files it may take more time to pass from one to other (it's due to the "rewriting" of this tech)... most of the time CMR are also more expensive compared to SMR strict equivalent on WD product line.
