Was buying this 4GB 770 for playing at 1080p a mistake?

Yeah but he was a peckerhead from day 1 and wasn't banned, was wondering if it was for a specific reason.

He did send me some pics of himself posing with various farm animals...I passed them onto Halyru though. Maybe that had something to do with it...?

Actually now I remember ages ago Hilbert warned him so yeah...makes sense.

    Not a mistake at all.

Perfect for 1080p, and the 4GB is a good choice as well.

The extra 2GB isn't really necessary, but for $50, why not. It's a great card regardless. So no, you didn't make a mistake.

I think it's not worth it. The not enough RAM thingy is overrated bull**** like 95% of the time in real time performance.

in bf4 without AA I hover under and over 2gb at times, games in near future will hopefully go beyond like the lovely bioshock does. (gta5 perhaps for ex., witcher3 etc.)

BF4, CODG and an extreme heavy modded Skyrim do use above 2GB @ 1080p when you max those games out.

Pushing the slider to the max I was around 3gb in bf4 at 1080 on 4gb 680s. They are a few games that push over 2gb like max payne maxed out modded skyrim. For the most part 2gb is fine for 1080.

Yep for sure, but that's nowhere near 4GB. :)

    EDIT:
actually I think we got our wires crossed..,.....I agree with u 2GB is kinda borderline, hence my suggestion he pay the extra $50. :)

I just had a thought....why don't graphics cards have upgradable memory like our motherboards do.

Wouldn't that make buying a card much easier?

For the same reason cars don't have manufacturer offered swap kits to upgrade later on down the line. They want you to buy new every time.

2GB is definitive the absolute minimum now for 1080p gaming for new games, a few selected new games at Ultra 2GB is not enough.

I saw a COD Ghost Youtube video of a 1080p game where the owner did have a constant load above 3GB - 60fps and he did not use AA, with everything replaced by 4k + 8k textures even Skyrim should be close to 3GB.
As a comparison, if I disable ENB's memory optimization and compression, I can easy hit 3GB with a mix of 1k, 2k and a few 4k textures, and those are even optimized with DDSOpt, on top I deleted the 3 original HD texture packs and unpacked + optimized the vanilla textures.

Yeah I know what you're saying, I've hit close to 3GB in Crysis3 and also ARMA III using maxdraw distance. And of course BF3..haha BF3.. ...:bang:
I quit trying to talk about it with some people who seem convinced 2GB is plenty because "BF3 vram load use scales with available vram. The more you have available the more the game will use" etc.
Ever heard that from anyone...? I think EA is into brainwashing players....lol.

If game needs data not immediately available, game will hitch. Or maybe my logic is flawed? :p
It uses what it needs anyway not what is available, even if all data is mapped into vram it's not going to help by just sitting there waiting. That's what caching is for.

Btw on that note, have you seen how much unnecessary mapping BF4 does?
The system commit is up well over 8GB sometimes, even with 4GB vram available half the game is still mapped into system memory...and for what?

Do u know any reason why the devs would do that? I can't think of one....

My best guess would be that they try to compensate for slow HDD I/O by keeping data mapped in memory.
Even with fast SSD's there can be a huge difference between streaming and having most of the data cached.
I wish more game studios would make use of pre caching when there is enough memory available, gives s much smoother experience than constant streaming from disk to memory, Windows itself isn't quite as effective when it comes to unknown and compressed files like textures.
Look at it like SQL, without it's own caching algorithms, plenty of memory and I/O acceleration products it would be really slow if only Windows was in control.

I can play BF4 just fine with 1.5gb @ ultra, although no aa.

Any newer game will stream the rest.

We are talking about system ram commitment not VRAM.
BF4 will not run at full ultra settings with 1.5 GB of VRAM, it does a mix of high and ultra.

I think it mite have been a mistake even with a Very Heavily modded skyrim well over 150+ mods most Graphics and Textures i'm only using 2.2GB with a 780.

You will find the GPU power will max out before you can really use more Vram.

    Ok.

About Bf4 yes it will (all ultra) no aa, no blur though and SSAO @ reso scale 110% and driver fxaa, usually sits ~ 1490mb, max so far I saw 1526mb.

Skyrim with hd textures showed maximum of 1700 on my system using Afterburner on screen display. My 770's are 2 gb at 1080p so I am pushing it a bit.
