    Mines bust too

I'm suffering the same problems as NvidiaFreak.

I'm running a non oc'd Gainward 5900XT with the 77.72 WHQL drivers. Whenever I try to run HL2 or CS i get,

'Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults..'

    after ok'ing that I get..

'Failed to set video mode - falling back to safe mode settings'

    then I get..

'Failed to set video mode - This game needs a minimum of Direct X 7.0 to function'

Now, i'm running Direct X 9.0c.. The Battlefield 2 demo runs fine.. but anything Valve related won't?

I tried to [clean] reinstall some earlier WHQL drivers and it says my card isn't supported. Prior to the 77.72 install this wasn't the case.

    Help!

    Cheers,
    mkyboy

Edit: I ran the program and i did zero fil and delete all data on my hd and reinstall windows and ran the gfx card driver and when i install the driver and reboot i get this

    _
[.][.][.][.][.][.][.][.] all over my screen then it reboot.

i ran alot of program and it say no error found on my hd. now for my gfx card. the bio boots and i can log into windows not using the nvidia driver. but when i use it my HD light stay on Yellow and my monitor be on yellow also. but if i unistall the driver from nvidia, my hd light be normal and i can log into windows. and no i never overclock nothing on my pc. i will install my FX 5200 card and let ya know. if the fx 5200 work on my pc then my card can finally R.I.P.

Btw Which is better to get ATI X700 Pro 256mb or ATI 9800 Pro 128mb.

anything is possible if you think about it. Remember a few months ago when Nvidia released a official driver that made all 6 series cards run 10c hotter in 2d mode? these crazy days anything is possible, my 2 cents...

    OMFG!!! (freakin)

OMG! This happened to me with CS:S also!!! friggin gay drivers! i think i screwed it up tho cause at the time i didnt have my anti-virus off or my download accelerator.. so i redownloaded them when those thigns were off and im going to try and reinstall these drivers. or wait, maybe i shoud try the 77.50 drivers? i dunno, personally i hate having to deal with all this ****. (srry for the language)

[edit] actually should i just go back to the 77.30? cause those came with bf2 demo and i wont have to download any more drivers (yes im being lazy srry =Þ [/edit]

You guys think the nVidia would officially release a driver that could even remotly damage an nVidia card (series even) ? Think twice.

Freak, your card just reached its end of life -- deal w/ it. Unless you voided your warranty (tought luck, deal w/ that too) you should be able to get a replacement. You didn't void it, did you ?

This is making me sooo angry... valve **** is still broken. I made sure i did the reinstall of the drivers right. Bottom line is, if you have an FX 5200 DO NOT USE 77.72 drivers. Save yourself some heartache. Ugh. Ill have to uninstall them again and just go back to 77.30 b/c otherwise, ill never be able to play any valve games (you know why, dumb message popping up saying " you need directx 7.0" but i have 9.0c!!!!)

[edit] i succesfully went back to the 77.30 drivers and i am running just fine now.;) I read in another thread that you shouldnt use these really anyway, because they were specifically made for 6 series cards regardless of the fact that they work with other card types i.e. FX series. Oh, and also, i just found out in that thread also that the higher the driver doesnt mean the better it is. I never knew that until now. :p Well, in terms of driver bug fixes then yea it is better....[/edit]

Edit: OK ^____^ my HD still work and no error and my fx 5200 is still kicking and working.

but its sad because now my 6800 can finally R.I.P it sever me well for a year thx to the 77.72 driver that kill it. i am using 71.89 driver and wont change it intill i get a new card as u see in the My Pc Specs. but hey ^_^ i can play games on the tv. and

No my gfx card did not reached end of life because it was kicking and alive and that change when i get a dx error on CS S and my other games and it only happen with 77.72 driver. so yes nvidia want to kill our cards so we can buy the 7800 card. smart move nvidia but u did't think this because now i am going with ATI and there nothing u can do about it. :D

I was discussing something with Unwinder today (Rivatuner programmer) as he has had a lot of reports of unusual core clocks for the GeForce 7800 GTX. After investigating it myself it seems that the minute you startup a 3D application, the GPU core frequency jumps towards 468 MHz (should be 430), a ~40 MHz difference is reported with any GeForce 7800 GTX. You can only measure this once you actually follow the clock real-time (see image below).

I just verified it, during some new test sessions with core clock monitoring we noticed that the G70 although clocked at 430 standard will in 3D applications immediately jump towards 468 MHz. Even overclocked at 480 Mhz the clock will jump towards 522 MHz, again that ~40 MHz difference. What is going on in that G70 GPU huh ??

After puzzling this and actually noticing that ASUS even has a marketing phrase for this called "geometric clock delta", they are actually advertising a 470 MHz product under that name with 'geometric clock delta' advertised.

As it looks right now, we will have to drop the idea of 2 frequency clocks on the G70 card (core/memory). What is going on with that 40 MHz differential ? We currently think that the Pixel and Vertex pipes or triangle setup might be clocked differently to explain that differential. Or even Shader Clock 430 MHz/Rop Clock:430MHz/Geometry Clock:470MHz.

We're not sure, but this is really interesting ! I fired off emails towards NVIDIA and hopefully I can get you a more detailed answer soon.

    Update 1:

    Answer from NVIDIA:

    Hey Hilbert,

As our chips become more advanced, we are implementing more complex clocking inside the chip. 430MHz is the primary clock speed of the chip and can be verified by fill rate tests.

We will work with Rivatuner to read the correct registers in order to report the right clock.

    Hope this makes sense.

Now if you disect that answer (as vague as it honestly is) we can make note of the fact that NVIDIA uses "Primary" clock speed. Obviously, there's a secondary clockspeed running also. Very likely there are surely different clocks for different pipes.

If 430 remains the primary clock then why can Asus (check that here) advertise it as 470 ?

That would be somewhat misleading to you, the consumer as you think it's an uber Ultra version or something like that. They sincerely use this to advertise:

    Engine Clock 470 MHz**
    **NV clock(430MHz)+Geometric Delta clock(40MHz)

As it seems nobody can explain the 40 MHz differential properly, yet is is being used as marketing gimmick, consumers automatically assume it's 470 MHz where that's not 100% true.

    + 40 MHz ?
In 3D applications the GeForce 7800 GTX immediately jumps towards 468 MHz, something new is happening for sure in that G70 core.

as you can see I WASN'T WRONG AFTERALL, secret overclock or so, and i suspect those 77.72 do the same trick on 6800 cards or something and that's why broke NVIDIAFREAK card, something is really up...so open your eyes, anything can break your card.

See i told u something was odd about the 77.72 card. i was playing games with the 6800 card and i think it was at 325hmz and 700mhz. but nvidia did something that overclock it our card and for me it, well i was not so lucky, thx to nvidia that add 40mhz more that mess up my card.

  13. that's not a design of software(driver). that's a design of the hardware of how there are different clocks in there. you oc something and it all raises with your oc. oc'ing has it's risks, everyone knows this very well when oc'ing. you can't take it for granted.

i wouldn't say it's a trick. it's just that different components of the chip operate at different speeds. this is actually more efficient. i believe transmeta tried to do something like this as well with the cpu where different parts of the chip operated at only the speeds it was needed at and you could also program the chip itself to run anything you want.
your card would have fried at 700mhz. it's not that simple as oc'ing the entire card. it's that different parts of the card are running at different speeds, not that they are oc'ed.

there is no evidence that this has been done on geforce 6 series. only on 7800gtx.

I have the 77.72 drivers on my sys and have no problems and can confirm that it does not overclock the 6800GTs like the 7800GTX. Ran the Rivatuner monitor while I ran 3DMark05 and the clock speeds stayed at 430. It seems its a hardware thing.

  15. The 77.72 are the new drivers especially for the new 7800 gtx, as such got that feature of overclock 40mhz or something that kicks in, maybe random, but if it's in driver, then maybe it kicked in on NvidiaFreak card..a case of bad luck?

anyway, damage is done, be it nvidia or just a dying card , the 77.72 are bad and just cause you dont have a problem now, dont mean you wont later when your card is cooked enough to suffer.

    better safe than sorry. :D

  16. no, it's not something initiated by drivers. and it's not oc'ing the card. it's a design of the hardware itself unique to the 7800gtx where different parts of the chip operate at different frequencies.

different parts of the chip can't run at different speeds unless it's designed that way... each part of the chip needs it's own clock crystal to run at a different speed. and from everything we know about geforce 6 architecture it's not designed like that. the entire chip runs at the same speed. the g70 architecture we know little about.

and i hardly doubt a 40mhz oc would have fubared the card like that... he would have seen stability warning issues long before his hardware was damaged if his driver was screwing with his card like crashing/rebooting/artifacts.

like i said, my card was not dying because i never had that error and its odd when i install the 77.72 driver i had the same error has the FX users then my card stop working. I went to compusa and they give warning to people who are buying the 7800 and 6800 dont install 77.72 driver because they test it on there 6800 and Fx 5950 U and it got mess up. Compusa thx me for the warning.

  18. whatever, anyway the damage is done and i doubt crying will help anymore :(

i'm sorry your card is dead, if it's the 77.72 then im sure the forum will see more like you, if not then its plain bad luck or something.
