Ahh I used to love this game! I never finished it but played the first half of it 1000 times on my aunties computer way back. I might actually get it again now you got my curiosity back! The online was awesome aswell I remember you could take your single player stats online and it was almost like MMO style

I suggest Discovery or Shattered Worlds, though I prefer the former.
Discovery is basically an expansion pack rather than a mod, to be honest.
It also adds a continuation from Freelancer's storyline beyond adding ships and re-balances.

Discovery does look interesting! Does it make the game any prettier too? Maybe a re-texture?

Most of the in-game models are overhauled, so a 're-texture' is probably a bit inaccurate.
If anything, the AI is a bit more sophisticated compared to the vanilla game.

I also forgot to mention Crossfire, another great continuation mod ('expansion pack', if you want to call it that way).

    [edit]
Oh, if there's anything enhanced, you can choose to add bloom, ENB-style, with Discovery.
It actually was made from Boris' ENB, and it's a matter of taste, to be honest, which is why it's optional.

Can you play online with a *cough* dodgy *cough* copy? I will buy it online, just that I want to try it out now. Old game, should be pennies.

There is no online anymore. Doesn't matter if you have legit copy or not. Single player is ok though.

I have no idea, but I guess you could.
The (RPG) servers only check whether you've installed any other mods aside from what the servers use in order to prevent cheats.

There are online servers with certain mods, like Discovery and Crossfire.
They managed their own servers so you have to play by their rules.

As much as i'd like to recommend you something solid,
i've come to the conclusion that nothing can beat a nice, clean vanilla playthrough.

Discovery and Crossfire are meant to be played after a vanilla playthrough, since the story continues from where the main game ends.
