Hi, I'm new here, though not new to 3D Guru. Anyways I've been thinking about buying a new graphics card, but I don't really know which is appropriate. My current card is a MSI GeForce FX5900XT 128MB, which is kinda lagging in the memory department when I play my MMORPG(Lineage 2). This game supports HDR rendering. I was thinking if anyone could recommend a nVidia card within the SGD300-SGD500 price range, which would be about US180-US320. My mobo supports only AGP cards. Thanks for any reply
AGP atm are still really good as no card apart from 7950 use the whole amout of 16x so 8x still gust as good ATM if want to have power of a 7900gt get a 7800gs+ if want good card get 7800gs gust ok card get 6800gt
If you're planning with stick with your system for a while, get a GeForce 7800GS ($290) If you're planning to upgrade within a year, get a GeForce 6800GT/GS/Ultra($150-$200) Those are your AGP options
In your price range I would get a 6800GS. I somehow like it better than a 6800GT as you will have a very good chance of unlocking the extra pipelines. The 7800GS is by no mean the same as a 7900GT and I kinda think it's overkilling for an AGP system. Conroe and DX10 are just around the corner, I would start saving money by buying a 6800 card. The improvement over an FX5 will really surprise you (Nvidia serie 5 were really crappy cards).
Yeah, I'm actually planning to get a new system once Windows Vista is out, so I guess within a year is about there. I guess I'll be going for a 6800GS Are there any good online retailers to recommend? Thanks for the replies
you love overclockers dont ya , i live about 2 mile away from it wot use is a u.k website if he lives in Singapore , its thousands of miles away (Silly Frag-Mysta ) try www.newegg.com as i thinks thats a little closer to you correct me if im wrong copey
Yea I live in Singapore. Anyways I'm having a helluva time finding a 6800GS...wonder if I should get something more available.
Yeah, most 6000 series cards are disappearing pretty fast as 7000 series has taken the main stream market place now. Personally I wouldnt touch the 6000 series anymore, yes you have a 5000 series, so a 6000 series, like a 6800 would be a big increase, but you are still buying really out dated material. I realize that dx10 is coming out, BUT it aint going to be for at least 8 months min, and I'm told by reps it will likely take even longer. Besides ALL dx10 software will be backwards compatible, so even todays cards will play the games, just not utilizing dx10, is that a huge deal, not likely for a while. Trust me get the 7800gs now, and you'll get at least a year out of it. If you buy a 6800, you still wont be able to play most current games, unless you use lower settings, so why bother upgrading then
A 6800? Low settings? Are you insane man? Dont go beatin on the 6800's because their a year old design, they are still great cards and can handle most any game @ high settings with varying AA.
"A 6800? Low settings? Are you insane man? Dont go beatin on the 6800's because their a year old design, they are still great cards and can handle most any game @ high settings with varying AA. " I was referring to the 6800gs mentioned above, not a 6800 ultra etc, so read before you comment please. I was also referring, if you would take the time to read, games over the next year or so, not so much of the current games, with the exception of Oblivion, which would not run with all settings on high on a 6800gs.
I did read before I commented. You also NEVER SAID games over the next year. You said CURRENT games. You also said only 6800. My points are UNDERLINED for emphasis. Also, a 6800GS is faster than an ultra when oc'd. So, yeah.
I upgraded from a vanilla 6800 to this 7800GS and haven't regretted it yet. If you are playing games with HDR, the 7800 is the way to go.
I went from a 6600GT which was an amazing card to this XFX 7800GS EE and it is a great card and has a lot of OC potential.
With a budget like that, you can get a 7800GS... you'll notice like a 600% increase with it, here's a link to a good card at newegg ( if you but from newegg ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?Item=N82E16814150131 If you can't buy from newegg, any 7800GS will do wonders, so just look for the cheapest card of them, but make sure it's reliable too PS. if your gonna upgrade when vista comes out ( I read above ) then get a 6800GS. You'll be very suprised how much better it is
"6800gs mentioned above, not a 6800 ultra" Unlocked and overclocked 6800GS are as fast as a 6800 Ultra (and they are pretty easy to set up this way). The point I was making is that the 6800GS is a good bridge waiting for a PCIe Vista / DX10 system. The 7800GS is not as great as to allow you to run the latest games maxed out either. Sure it's faster, but the 6800GS is still a better price for performance card and a the best way to wait the next generation of hardware. It's also by no mean obsolete and will only choke on a few games (which will also make the 7800GS choke anyway).
Yes 6800GS will be good boost. 7800GS will be even better and if you can find Gainward's specail 7800, then it will easily last till Vista and DX10 comes out
