680,670 were both gk104, so is the 770. thats where the different gpu comes into play, the 780 is gk110

The gap widened a bit latter down the line, but I do agree the 670 hurt the 680 a bit in sales and as a top end card.

Here is some food for thought.

Replace current designations with these and look at the performance differences.

    Current--------------------------fictional
    780Ti-----------------------------780
    780-------------------------------770
    770-------------------------------760Ti

Makes a bit more sense and looks closer to the previous generation.

sure didn't look gimped in reviews.... People just need to get past GPU naming schemes. Just because it's a GK104, doesn't mean it was ever intended to be a mid-range GPU. The name, in all reality, means nothing as far as it's intended market position. The designations are nothing but reference names that, outside of NVidia, are actually meaningless.

when Nvidia purposely holds back a faster card then I do consider that a bit strange...AMD had nothing to compete against it at the time so they decided that a 680 was all that they needed to bring to market versus releasing the GK110 part which was ready to go...everyone that kept up with hardware info knew that a GK110 was being held back

Nvidia was not doing anything wrong but the 600 series was originally set to be a mid range card

About sums it up. The lightening was 550$ so i take it that it's within the OPs budget. Why not just get a EVGA 780 classy? 560$ after rebate. Was 510$ after rebate last week.

Agreed there is no such thing as overkill.

is there a reason to get the EVGA Classified over the Superclocked?...the price on the Superclocked version is tempting

What gpu did nvidia purposely hold back? The titan that wasnt ready till feb 2013? Gk104 was released march 2012.

If you need to ask, then likely the answer is no. The SC is a good card but I'd get the ACX cooler model.

I have the card decent oc good temps and can't hear the fans and good warranty. It's good card but I still do want the amp!, they fixed it with new firmware but in some tests this sc model still is better lol I guess this card is just as good or even better and I'm happy with it.

The Classy is an OCing card. Even on air the things clock pretty monstrous. 1200 on the core seems to be a given, there are many with 1300 on air. Put it on water, get Skyn3t's BIOS, and the EVGA precision voltage tool to manually bypass Nvidia's restrictions on voltage control and power target...and well less you run into heat wall i don't think 1350-1400mhz is out of the question. You'll be able to boost to 150% power target and 1.5v on the core.

If you aren't hitting your power limit with your overclock don't bother.

You can over volt with EVGA Precision? What about with non-EVGA cards? My temps are ridiculously good and I'd love to try more volts for a higher clock but I don't want to flash the bios.

EDIT just re-read more carefully and now I understand lol d'oh. Tempting but scary to flash a bios, never done it before with a GPU

What exact GPU do you have? There may be a way to bump your voltage.

Bios flashing is very easy done it at least 100 times.

I'll have a look for the model name when I get home but it's an Asus reference 780 Ti
