USB to PCMCIA adaptor = available?

Discussion in 'General Hardware' started by realistknight, Apr 27, 2005.

  1. Hey,

Is it possible to get a USB device that would enable me to use PCMCIA cards? I have some lying around, and my new laptop has no PCMCIA slot, this would be really useful. If it is available, can anyone point me on the right direction?

    thanks :)

I doubt it. USB is far too slow for PCMCIA

    USB2 should be fine though...

    no, it wont:

    PCMCIA: 133 mb/s
USB 2.0: 60 mb/s without any overhead present

there is no external interface close to the bandwith of pcmcia/pci, the only one close enough is Gbit lan, but that wouldnt work for a pcmcia card i think

erm, *mental block* does PCI run at 133Mbits or MBytes?
USB2 is 480Mbits (well its really about 400Mbits or 50MBytes).

Even if USB2 is slower than PCI, it doesnt mean most PCMCIA cards wont work. If its only a modem or network card, then USB2 will be fine.

If you are running a PCMCIA graphics adapter or capture device, then it may under perform.

It all depends on how much bandwisth the card uses.

PCI runs at 133 Mbytes, after all, what would be the point of getting a 1 Gbit lan card on a PCI buss that is limited just a bit above a standard 100 Mbit card

also, most harddrives and such run of the PCI bus, and it would be really bad if your HDD's were capped at 133 mbit, loading times would be awefull

and yeah you have a point, but i wonder why the first poster would need this, if his new lappie doesnt have pcmcia, then he most likely already had Wlan, lan and a modem (my lappie has lan, modem and i use the pcmcia for Wlan)
