Universal Serial Bus version 4 version 2.0.

The guy or gal who comes up with these names is a really funny person.

We're about to reach the point where it's faster and cheaper to 'network' your house with USB rather than ethernet.

How much does a 10Gbit NIC costs these days?

I hate the USB-C connector, we need a better standard.

try to place a usb cable for more than a couple of meters... decent rj45 cables don't give a problem for tens to hundreds of meters.

that's true , even for charging this is noticeable , the length of the cable , even a little bit , Really counts for the time it takes to charge things ...
if you have to send data over usb-c , cables can't be Too long or you'll never get those speeds

    So true!

The naming scheme of recent USB standards is so retarded it`s hard to believe!

They might as well just call it SB at this point because it's not universal when there are so many exceptions to what the port can be used for.

I have mixed feelings about it. I think it's good for phones and peripherals but it is a bit too fragile. I personally haven't broken any yet but I know of people who have.

Yep, im just waiting when USB C on my case is going to break.

If it was up to me i'd release USB 4 and just make A type port go as far as it can and C can do the rest if needed, case closed. Id rather use peripherals with a sturdy (and compatible) A type on everything but the phone, dont really need that much speed anyway.

While i hate the naming, and the fact no one is using the 'official' name "USB4" (no spaces), I am curious if this is a move to supplant DisplayPort 2.0 which has a max rate of 80 gb

Hmm, with usb and display port being able to run at 80Gbits then HDMI needs to pick up the pace.
@toffty Doh! didn't realise you wrote almost the same. :(

I don't really care about the tech of USB any more, it's the cables that let it down. You buy 1 cable that says Fast Charge compatible and plug in to phone and it says 'Fast Charge 58 mins to full'... all good. Buy another cable that is supposed to be Fast Charge compatible and plug it in with similar battery level and it says 'Charging 2 hours 14 mins'. The cost of the cables doesn't seem to indicate quality either.

    Came here to say similar.
And I wonder what the max length cable is before needing active.

It's not because the USB ports will fail after a few months of continued data transfer, at least that's my experience.

I can't count the number of times my usbc cable has popped out of the back of my computer because of the weight of the cable....

There could be variation in either socket or plug quality.
My phone, USB sticks, camera and PCs all have tight and solid fitting USB-C ports.
Theres no chance they can release without some effort.

I'm pretty careful to always insert dead straight and pull out the same - having been wary of how easy to damage these ports might be since I started using, so that may figure.
Cables dont get pulled daily though sometimes many times a day.
A higher daily work case will probably suffer more.

It's a high speed usbc cable so it has additional circuitry in the plug, it's quite long as a result so it hangs out pretty far, just a slight nudge and it easily dislodges.
