I have a i5 3570 (non k version), 16gb dd3 ram, a basic mother board running a sapphire tri x r9 290. Everything worked like a charm until i played assassins creed origins. it works great but i have to compromise on quality setting and play a mix of medium to high. i game at 1080p

So i can either upgrade my cpu, ram & mb or just the graphic card.

    Choice 1
    i7 8700k
    CM Hyper 212 Evo
    Asus ROG Strix z370 e
    G Skill Tridentz RGB 16gb dd4 3200 (PC4 25600)

    Choice 2
    Upgrade the R9 290 to a 1080GTX

Please suggest what would be worthy of the upgrade.

Tough, I'd say more real world performance difference would be a 1080.

Logically, 1080 is 2 years old at this point so I'd probably stick to new platform and wait for new GPU cycle.

if you aiming to play at 1080p i suggest you take the first choice as assassins creed origins is a cpu intensive game specially for quad core cpus .
but if you will upgrade your monitor and play at 1440p i suggest you to upgrade your GPU, increasing the resolution would eliminate the CPU bottleneck but not now wait until new gen GPU
