    Hey all,

I have been running 7800GTX for the last 6 years:) time to upgrade...

I'm going to build x6 AM3 platform with 870 amd chipset since I won't do SLI. However, I would like to have VGA for graphics and 1 for physx.

Here is the mobo I'm considering
    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3517#sp

    it has 2 pcie (16x & 4x)

I was thinking of getting GTX460 for graphics and GTS250 for physics down the line.

Will that work? 4x should be enough to physx right?
I have been so behind that I just want to make sure my new build will work as I want...

    thanks

    Yeah it would work.

Probably be better off just getting a 470.

I should mention I'm creating a near silent rig. Besides, for now I will get only GTX 460 and GTS250 when more physx titles come out.

The 460 is a great card, runs cool and the fan stays quiet if you keep it low. I am very pleased with the upgrade I made from my 260.

I'm coming from a64 opteron with 7800gtx so anything midrange will be a huge difference. from what I read gtx460 is a great balance of price, performance, power consumption, and noise.

are there any dates for next ati & nvidia chips? so far I got only power supply and case so if it's near then I might just wait and see if it's a worthy step up.

nVidia is still working on releasing cards for the GT400 series. AMD/ATI is expected to release new cards later this year according to rumors. Personally, I doubt you'd be disappointed with a GTX460. I'm running a GTX275 while my GTX460 is being RMA'd....and quite honestly, I can't wait for my GTX460 to get back. I bought the GTX460 to replace this GTX275 with very low expectations in regards to performance gain....but the card impressed me greatly. AMD/ATI's HD6000 series is coming...and will probably outperform everything nVidia currently has out. The question is whether or not you really want to wait 3-6months, possibly longer.

You've already waited this long... if you can wait until 2011 there will be new socket types. Though we don't know for a fact whether or not the new baseclock will include USB and PCIE effectively killing overclocking unless you have an unlocked chip... in which case it will merely cripple overclocking.

Only rumors of killing off overclocking are concerning Intel processors. AMD's formal announcement is that they're releasing socket AM3+ for Bulldozer arch processors which AMD is trying to avoid stopping from being overclocked.

thanks for the news guys. Yeah, I already waited this long...
money is not the issue although I don't need the newest and best stuff since when I play games, I play them on my HD projector with 120" screen; and it has resolution of 1280x720 only... at 720p with AA AF at max, 460GTX should play any title up to date and look real good doing so:) I too have 2405fpw with 1920:1200 but when you play on 120" screen and then there is no going back to 24" unless its strategy game in which bigger res=more view of terrain etc.

I'm going to hold off until black friday, if deals are good then I'm gonna go with it and just enjoy the system for the next 5 years:)

dude ya 460 will destroy 720p lol and i have 2 in SLI and still runnin an old proc and never go below 40fps at 1920X1200 with everything maxed which is more then enough as even movies are only at 24fps ppl so come on, anythin higher then that is good, i kno this cuz i run movie projectors at my local theater! lol

If you want silent then i recomend the gigabyte or MSI, they have great coolers. I have both Gigabyte cards OCed to 820 and never hear them and temp stay around 60c.

I'm not on top of games, but I saw the tech demos from nvidia and developers will be stupid not to pursue using the physx to its fullest potential.
