So I ran 3d mark06 and got a score of about 8300, but before that I got an estimate of 9200. I thought this was very strange especially as the estimate doesn’t consider overclocks and I’ve got all my stuff overclocked. So what could be causing this under estimate performance?

if the first run was done after a fresh install thats likely the reason for the drop in scores. fresh installs will always net a higher 3dmark score. generally speaking the older the os install is the lower the 3dmark score will drop.
your gpu is a major limiting factor in the overall performance of your system. if you went with a mid to high end current card. i wouldnt be surprised to see your 3dmark score go twice as high if you went with a 460 or equivalent amd card.

Twice as high? No way....My system scores 14500 in 06, no way he would score 16k+....

He could easily get over 16K, he has a Q9650 at 3.2 and he's about to have a GTX 460 which is two times faster than your 250.

And my rig with GTX460 at 800/2000 only gets 19k in 3DMark06. Also, he's OC'd to 3.2ghz....not 4ghz. Also, 3DMark06 is extremely CPU bound....which means adding a GTX460 isn't going to double his score, because his CPU OC isn't increasing.

check orb. typical systems of his specs with a gtx460 can hit 16k easy.

Agree, he should be able get way more than one of my old C2D scores.

So if I were to have a fresh install of windows, would that improve my PCs performance in games too?

probably not unfortunately. your gpu is really holding your system back. even if you picked up a 8800 or 4xxx series gpu you would see a biiiig improvement over your 7950.

Just done a retest after buying a new CPU cooler, and got 10,038 3D marks with a CPU score of 5,418.

Just goes to show how important good cooling is.
