The question is though, do those directives,acts, bills, etc. actively help to reduce terrorism or crime?
I don't think so. From 2600 (Vol.25, #1, page 51): "The German Federal Criminal Office calculated that the rate of solved crimes will only rise by 0.006 percent at best by using retained data."

Since terrorists know that communications are being recorded/monitored most likely they will simply avoid it. Just think about proxies, VPNs, prepaid cellphones, internet cafes, etc..

This is more an invasion into our privacy than it is a tool to catch criminals or terrorists.

we have been slowly changing into a big brother state which is a big reason why i had to move away, i cant bring my family up in such a society.

i dont want to sound like a guy in a tin foil hat but the powers that be really want to just use us as puppets for their own gains, most of this terrorist stuff is all fabricated anyway to fool the general population so this can be done.

Well, I'm following developments in the USA and Germany (German, currently living in the USA) and don't know which ones are worse, to tell you the truth. It's just frightening to me that most people don't realize what's going on or just ignore it. What I don't get is that experts always highlight that those measures aren't helping to make us any safer. And still they are implemented and sold to us by politicians. Don't they realize that they are living in the same world? For example: sad as it was, but did all those cameras in London prevent any of the July 2005 bombings?

I can't believe that "1984" is apparently becoming a reality...

What is mind blowing to me is that in a democracy (= ruled by the people) something like that is possible. Does this mean that the majority of people want it that way? I hope not. I hope it's just the lack of information and their apathy. Which might be even worse...
