TSMC is stating that it is making good steps on the 7 nm production process. It says to have a tape-out of at least fifty new chip designs before the end of the year. 7 nm with euv will reach volume...

i love it when companies are circumspect about their prowess.

the only reason this press release came about is because Samsung was crowing about their 7nm lpp process "advancing".
this announcement translated from business-speak is a full on slap down to Samsung as TSMC is in full production @ 7nm and as they stated are taping out another 50 ic.
and yes they are making the A12, Ryzen 2, Navi, Qualcomm 850, etc...
this news was in addition to all of that.

Seems like a great time to invest in TSMC. Though I do wonder how they're going to keep up with this workload.

I'd say GloFo made a big mistake holding off 7nm. They could've really profited off that demand.

And while TSMC and Samsung are rattling their sabers about how much progress they are making with 7nm, GF is instead proudly giving up on R&D. Go figure.

    o
    oh yes...
as soon as i heard of the 7nm consortium they assembled to get this off the ground i started buying shares. still don't have as much as i'd like, but this was a good safe bet with Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD behind them. right there you have 98% of the cell market and (sometime next year) half of the pc market.

TSMC has a new fab the size of a small town in Kaohsiung built for this scale...the "gigafactory" of IC

It may work out for GloFlo to start picking up the > 7nm business as Samsung and TSMC transition over to 7nm, 5nm etc. Personally I thought them buying IBM's division was giong to make one heck of a 7nm process and I bet it would have been especially for high performance computing. I hope they at least continue that effort on EUV later on.

    7nm is Big Science.
it is anything but easy. and for GloFlo to stop research speaks directly to a lack of funding.
if anyone could do 7nm, Intel would already have 10nm (really the same) already.
guys give credit where credit is due.
