No problem man! My pleasure! :) Well, In the end it does'nt matter what brand/card you get.. Just flash the asus/xfx bios onto your card like I did and you'll have all the clock speeds and voltage room you need.. I think getting 2 5970's is the way to go.. They work with most crossfire motherboards and you dont have to worry about heat and having 7 pcie x16 slots.. 4 of which will hopefully be at x16 speed.. Cheers and congrats!!! You'll absolutely love it!

Marri - if u are intending to stay on air it maybe worth seeing if sapphire add a vapor-x cooler onto their 5970's. That would help keep temps down if u are crossfiring them.

thanks alot Bodar , you've been great all the way and a positive influence.. ;)

thanks for that MikeMK , would've been perfect.
I just checked they still haven't released the 5970 version as yet..
But I'll be sure to ask them if they can supply mine with it..
    It'll be perfect if I opt for , 4way 5870 Vapor X tho...
If only I had a different casing and the eVGA borad..
I think it'll be much more costly if I change my casing and board just for the sake of going 4way 5870.. still tempting tho.
Thanks alot for brining that to my attention.. ;)
I had no plans of stepping towards ATi this time around..
But here I am... desperate to go Red..
I'm guessing ur going to go 4-way 5870 this time..
Or do u still think there are chances of you going for the 5970's instead..

+1 :) Awesome Marri!! Thanks a bunch! i'm going for 2 5970's in a bit.. I've been running the 4-way 5870 on either the evga classified or the p6t7 ws supercomputer.. Both boards actually work perfect with the latest ati drivers.. The reason I wanted to run 4 cards instead of 2 dual chip cards is because The clock speeds start at 850 as where the 5970's clocks start at 725...
But I'm sure with a little ln2 you can boost those dual core chips beyond anything. :)

actually, not true anymore. xfx, msi and asus have their own unique bios for their cards, whilst some other brands are still using generic bios. the difference is in the oc range, the voltage range, the default fan stepping, and some have noted differing levels of performance. thats why people have been flashing their bios recently.

the 5970 does have the vapor chamber cooling setup. it is integrated underneath the fan shroud. except instead of it being a sapphire design, it is an ati design. this was a necessity to keep the 5970 cool, and in most cases, it keeps the 2 gpus on the 5970 running at lower temps than the single gpu on a 5870 with reference cooler.

what i would rather see on these cards is a proper fan setup that blows down onto a heatsink, rather than across. on a down blowing fan, you can ensure only new outside air hits the heatsink, whereas with the ferry paddle fan, it blows air across it, and the path of least resistance is to make no contact with the heatsink at all. that and downblowing fans are generally curved which improves aerodynamics, reduces resistance, and hence decreases noise.

i think the sapphire bios for the 5970 only allows for 1.16v max, but the xfx allows for 1.2v max and the asus 1.25v max?

right now im trying to get my hands on a sapphire 5970, and hope that it really is the object of my wet dreams, lol.

So.. The xtreme speeder contest is going well.. I've saved oc profiles leading up to 5.0ghz
using the phase change system.. Hopefully have some awesome numbers tonight.. It's getting there.. slowly but surely! :) cheers everyone!

Late to join the party hehe

My first time using triple GPUs on any kind (ATI or Nvidia). Tight fit there with the HD5870s slotted into PCI-E x16 #1 + #3 + #5 slots.

Okay first Tri-CrossfireX runs with 3x HD5870 flashed to Asus bioses at stock 850/1200 speeds. I did try Vantage run with them at stock 850/1200 and overclocked at 985/1263 but got much lower GT 1 - Jane Nash score in the low 61-62fps vs my 2x HD5870 run with GT 1 - Jane Nash in the 71-77fps ???. 3dmark05 had virtually same score as 2x HD5870 ????

    System:

    3x GPU = Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
2x GPU = WinXP Pro SP3 for all except Vantage benchmark

    Low GT1 3D Vantage @850/1200 with 3x GPU = 24,397 vs 2x GPU = 25,115

Very easy breach of 32K @850/1200 for 3dmark06
    3x GPU = 32,296 vs 2x GPU = 31,676

    3Dmark05 - 3x GPU 40,214 vs 2x GPU 40,215 ?? Seems to be low GT1.

    3Dmark2003 - nice boost 3x GPU = 158,942 VS 2x GPU = 130,936

Need to figure out the low GT1 scores in vantage and 3dmark05 for 3x GPU vs 2x GPU heh.

vantage doesnt bench well with more than a dual card crossfire setup. guru3d reported a similar issue with the 5770 trifire, but then again, vantage is a synthetic test. im sure your xeon cpu would be more than enough for the 5870 trifire to scale well in games, so give some game benches a shot and see how it performs.
