After the WD debacle, Toshiba follows. The introduction of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology has enabled HDD manufacturers, such as Toshiba, to increase the capacity of their spinning plat... Toshiba Lists HDD Models Using SMR Technology
vendors that implement smr properly shouldn't suffer from low performance, infact they usually have higher random small accesses performance than the cmr disks.
The problem with SMR isn't random accesses, it's random writing (actually almost "any" writing whatsoever is much slower).
random access encompasses writing as much as reads. and its not a problem on multi tiered cache designs.
This is like the new "race-to-the-bottom"!! First it was crappy airline seats, now crappy SMR HDRs!!! HUMPHRA!
Personally I'm waiting for crappy/cheap 10 GB SSD to put in a home NAS such as the Nimbustor 4. They will always still be faster than any HDD and completely silent.
