I just love his style, the hard rock with lots of grit. From blues to classic rock and bits of punk. Its a massive combination of licks and legato that make his sound. From Snakepit to Guns N Roses to Blues Ball to Velvet Revolver - his music is awsome.

For me it's about the touch and feel. I don't care how fast one can play. SRV's phrasing and feel was something nobody can reproduce. Even his most basic stuff was very difficult to nail down. Like that Mattrach kid posted before, his version of Lenny is just horrible, he doesn't get the song down, it's very hard with SRV.

This just sums up his way of playing, he puts so much into it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF1p8sawWJ0

Tough decision, but in no particular order I think I'd choose:

    Dimebag Darrell
    Randy Rhoads
    Steve Vai

Slash isn't knowing for Shredding and hence his music doesn't reflect it. I bet he couldn't play Vais stuff, but I would like to see Vai put the same feel and vibrato into November Rain and Sweet Child O Mine. Anyone can copy who and what they want, but in the end only the guitarist who made it will ever be able to reproduce that sound...

Most people agree that Tone is 40% fingers and feel, I am willing to be it's probably more than that.

    3. Kurt Cobain

Figured I'd throw a new one into the mix :) Now, I know, Kurt wasn't much of a guitar player per se. Even I don't think so. But he was my inspiration to pick up the guitar when I was 10, so he definitely deserves mention in my post.

Fair Enough, I don't think of him much as a guitar player but rather the father of the grunge era. I don't like him much though because he killed himself.

    Here's a much argued vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojUtFyfnIJE

Joe wins hands down, amazing feel and control. Simple and emotive.
Yngwie owns too, best vibrato in the buisness and lets face Yngwie IS shred.
Steve kinda lets the side down tho. A bit try hard ??
Wadda ya think? (might start to feel some heat on this one)
