Time for a new PC!

I think I'd go the cheap route first by getting the CPU/Mobo/RAM then salvaging this aged GTX580. If that doesn't work out to be good, then i still have options to get a 970.

This is a perfect bday gift for myself.

 

Upgrading your CPU/MOBO/RAM will make games smoother even if you still using those 580...If I were you I will also get an SSD..

 

I already have an SSD, so that gets salvaged as well.

 

Well, that WOULD be good. Although it seems that the MINIMUM he should look at is probably DDR3-1866, but probably not necessary to go much above DDR3-2400. That seems to be the sweet spot for RAM nowadays with Devil's Canyon/Haswell Refresh.
