I dunno why you guys derailed, 290 /290x aren't mining cards.

Agreed, Minings the cause of their cards selling out everywhere, and their prices rocketing, not Mantle, as that was unveiled at that GPU 14 tech day way back in Sept (?) last year.

They are, thats why in the states their prices have rocketed, and they are pretty much hard to get hold of.

Overclockers only allowed a max of 2 per person (or something like that) when they got the 290s in to stop all the miners buying them up in their hundreds.

It is pretty sloppy from AMD, while delays in bf4 implementation was ok, it being mainly a MP game with semi-long shelf life of play, but a SP game like thief it kind of defeats the purpose entirely. You'd think with AMD excusing themselves from the rigor of having to do monthly drivers they would pouring manpower into launching mantle (assisting eidos/nixxes) with a bang. But yeh i guess there are no major rival gpu launches atm where benchmarks are needed its not a priority yet.

Worst case, Mantle would have been delayed a couple days..... Even NVidia has hickups at times, but nothing like AMD with Mantle. That's one of the biggest reasons I always jump back to NVidia. AMD just sucks at execution and everything seems to get delayed by several weeks to months.....

All those using the 290 and 290X for mining, would strongly disagree... They might not have been designed with mining as the primary purpose, but they are insanely good at mining.

Some people overreact too much. It will be released when it is ready.

If i was going to upgrade my GPU it would have been a custom cooled AMD 290X this time, mostly due to Mantle and the lower price for the performance it delivers.
which is in between the Titan and GTX 780 TI and in some cases depending on the game it even beats the GTX 780TI according to Hilberts review.
On top of that also comes with 4gb of GDDR5 memory.
The only thing that held me back are the very high temps of 94c (I already owned a GTX 480 and i know what it's like) even with a custom cooled card the core temps might be lower around 74c.
I am sure that a lot of other places on the GPU get really hot which i believe won't be good in the long run.

Now as for Mantle i believe it has a very good potential as an API but is still in it's early stages of development. As we know Games in general need at least 2 years of development, in some cases more.
Mantles API actual release might have caught Battlefield 4 and Thief during halfway of the games development using the DX11 api and needed to be patched for support.
Plus the actual drivers are still in an early stage,I hope by the time we get another mantle supported game it will be implemented during a games development from the beginning also by then the AMD drivers with mantle will have matured as well.
Also let's not forget tressfx which is still in it's early stages and things can only get better like tresfx 2.0.
To come to a conclusion these new techs MANTLE and TRESFX are still in their early stages and only time will tell if they will be a success or not,at least it's much better than Nvidias Physx.

EDIT: Forgot to mention in the beginning of my post about upgrading to a 290x another reason is that i wanted to try out an ATI/AMD GPU as i have never owned one before and i wanted to switch sides for once.

I upgraded at the start of the year only because of Mantle and BF4...

So far Mantle does not run correctly in BF4... and then BF4 is crashing all these months after it's launch.

So when I read that this game was being Released with Mantle, which they said it was going to be, I was really excited, finally I can put my new video card to use, and then now this news of "coming later via an update".. I guess you can imagine my disappointment.

I know in time it will come, but yeah.... nothing but disappointment so far.

I'm a bit disappointed as well. Guess I will play other games while waiting for the Mantle patch then.

I can understand your disappointment, I would have been too.
I almost was going to upgrade to at least a 290 if not the flagship 290x mainly for Mantle (and the fact that all consoles have an AMD gpu).
I thought it was about time to switch to AMD after all these years being strictly a Nvidia user. But i changed my mind mainly because my GTX770 can handle almost any game at max settings in 1080p,
so i thought that i would be throwing my money away and decided to wait for Maxwell or for an AMD refresh as i have a feeling 2gb of vram wont cut it in this years games,
even in 1080p same goes for GPU power.
This is what i do when it comes to purchasing games i usually wait for system requirements or better yet reading here in the gaming section for feedback on how a game runs,
and if i cant at least max it out without AA i wait until a upgrade my GPU to fully enjoy a game with max details.

I don't care who to blame for that. Im just sad because i expected thief to be the next "test" for mantle and i wanted to see how it performs there. I mean 1 game isn't much yet.

    People...

Until you stop pre-ordering ( or worse still - reading about an awful release and then buying it anyway ) unfinished products, you will continue receive increasingly unfinished products!

    It really isn't rocket science.

The only language the powers that be at the software houses understand is the one spoken by your wallets.

ive prepared myself to expect a year of teething problems with all things mantle to avoid dissapointment :) i find it best not to take it for granted anyone who wants your money will be upfront with anything that may lower the chance of them getting your money ...
when direct x came out it wasnt an overnight successs to say the least...

LoL, Yes, you can. By what magical logic you came to believe We Do Not Know that Limited GPU instruction set can't be emulated by much wider CPU one?

Point is, it's quite complex math and believe me I do not want my CPU to run those things. It's likely 100 times worse workload than EAX CPU emulation which sound card manufacturers license these days.
Sound should be done by specialized HW, not by CPU as it's main bottleneck in most cases.

Another funny thing is to point out, that you should put more unnecessary work on CPU in Mantle thread :D

I heard a lot of binaural recordings and TrueAudio is far superior.

The way I read it was at launch (official release) of stable mantle drivers (14.3?).
