How come they didn't make the game in Crystal dynamics engine like Deus Ex HR?
Unreal is kinda PhysX oriented and now they will add Mantel support.

Yes it does seem to use a lot of vram. I got 2.7 gb with double buffering, shadows on high, and everything else maxed @1440P. Have not checked with triple buffering and shadows very high yet, but will tonight.

It will use as much as it can and stream the rest (texture streaming)..

Didn't you all get this by now?

DOF high and parallax are bit framerate killers, though they're not used all the time. And of course SSAA.

Tessellation has some impact, but it's only used on important character models.

Hmmm, gonna set it off then. You won't notice tessellation in the dark anyway. They shouldve used it on the stone walls and paths instead imho. :p

Fairly recent UE3 builds (Build 700 something and newer?) apparently sets the texture streaming cache automatically and try to allocate as much VRAM as possible thus the high usage reported by monitoring programs. :)
(The one in Thief appears customized though.)

we've had 1 single user report high vram usage, more than a day later still no-one confirmed this, many give their opinion though.
so yeah it uses a lot of vram?
    who knows, whatever.
and yeah ue3 uses as much vram as possible eh?
    yeah, sure it does.

Yes only more recent U3E stuff with bigger textures like BioShock, Batman AO, etc. Just like Cryengine3, Frostbyte, Glacier or Maxpayne3 engine,..

I play fine with just 1.5gb, no weird out of vram pauses at vram cap. With 570gtx @ 1.28gb i could too, although bf4 was a bit too much @ ultra.

So anyway Thief runs good, no streaming stutter ~ 1500mb, even with SSAA - high (40ish fps avg)

There's a small delay directly when the level starts (Can be seen in the main menu as well.) before the textures have fully loaded so there's some pop-in with that but usually it streams very fast so it's only visible for a second or so.

Fade-in or pop-in of objects is not something I've seen but the levels are pretty twisting and turning so you usually have restricted view though there are some open areas as well.
(There's some with the shadows on objects though and they do have a slightly noticeable stairwell effect or how it's called.)

Unfortunately I haven't bought anything from them in the past. I took them up on their Thief offer though. From what I've read it's hit or miss, but most of the issues are with physical items. I'm using a prepaid card so I'm not in a great deal of trouble if something happens. For $26 it's hard to say no. They've been around since at least 2009.

I'll let you guys know when I get my key. And I'll let you guys know if I don't. :D
