Yeah it's an old one.
The most intense combat footage out of Afghanistan yet. A soldier gets pinned down by Taliban fire and survives 4 rounds hitting him thanks to his armor.
The guy was a bloody fool for running into a kill zone, but at least he survived. I know how easy it is to judge after the fact from behind the calm of a desk and not in the adrenaline rush of a firefight; I at least hope this soldier learnt his lesson.
The correct procedure by the way would be to establish a base of fire with the enemy while breaking contact while using smoke grenades; you don't play on his field by his rules. It's better to break contact and let the enemy get away than fighting on his prepared ground and losing, you can always get them another day.
By doing what the soldier did all he did was make himself an easy target to be shot and thereby forcing several of his colleagues to walk into the kill zone themselves to rescue him. He probably didn't think of this at the time and just wanted to get off the hill, so I'm not judging him on that.
Icebird, if you still read this forum, is it standard vest equipment for a U.S. soldier to have at least one smoke?
