Someone has kindly posted a zipped and sorted tar.gz of the steam folder that is extracted from the files that are hosted by Valve themselves.

Currently this is what you get when you run the script
    Code:
    ./steam.sh
./steam.sh: line 49: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted

having steam move to Linux could put some pressure onto developers to actually start developing for the platform.

it could be a pretty giant leap for other OS gaming

don't see that happening, especially when developers these days are so lazy to even do a good job porting a game to windows.

If Steam do they'll pretty much have the monopoly on digital distribution for linux (along with mac). Sure you'll think it's a bad thing, but for an under-respected OS it's going to bring a great deal of interest to it now.

If more games use STEAM on Linux (on top of possible Valve games that launch with it), I'm going back to Linux, I'm actually quite fed up w/ Windows.

Well since its already been announced that Source games will be supported on Linux, is the next logical step not to have them use Steam also?

    Hardly Earth shattering news...

Oh my god, if this is true and the games take decent advantage of my hardware, I'll be changing to Linux as soon as Valve releases this.

Only the developers of Portal3 have said they're going to port it. There's been no official word from Valve about Source or Steam, yet.

The reason why this mostly failed for you seems that you didn't run it elevated. (sudo ./steam.sh).

I'd only say ulimit failed because it wasn't super user. The rest is standard steam stuff, not linux.

I find it interesting that a number of people have linked Steam on Linux = games coming to Linux. Steam and the games that use it are not the same thing and just because Steam may be heading to Linux doesn't mean anyone who uses Steam on the PC for DRM purposes or DD purposes is going to go to the trouble of converting their games.

well the big question for me is valve going to start using open-gl over directx? I would love to see some big time games come over to linux. But they need to get some more support. Like will my future 5970 work in crossfire meaning both chips on the same card. And will Logitech release some damn drivers for their stuff?

Considering they're going to add Mac OSX support, I'm wondering, are they going to add OpenGL to the source engine? If so, would be nice to be able to switch to OpenGL on Windows PC's aswell.

No point on this but well...

developers will stop using steam before coding for linux.

Performance wise ingame, windows and linux are teh same. so... :/

Yes they announced opengl Source. It is also a given since they announced source for mac.
    http://store.steampowered.com/news/3569/
Valve has only officially announced source games on MAC, not for linux, but if they have a linux steam client, then it is probable for source on linux too.
