    A poloriser filter would help.
The flare is caused by th light bouncing off every piece of optics in your lens and reflecting off them. This filter bends the flare and reflections to stop this from happening. It wont work all the time, but should help.

Were you using the auto-focus or the manual focus? It sort of looks like you were too close to the subject so it came out blurry.

Thinking about getting the EF 50mm F/1.8 II. I've been recommended it many times because of it's price.

You have a very nice looking cat :). I have the 50mm f1.8 and it well worth money. The focal length is pretty useless on a 1.6 crop but in low light its dam useful :)

w00t!??!?! 50mm on a 1.6 crop is THE best focal length for portraits. It is equal for roughly 85mm on full frame, which is again best range for portraits (which does not make this focal length useless at all)

I just ordered a Canon EOS 40D, should have it early next week, then I'll go out again and take some pics. BTW, my Nikon D40 is up for sale if anyone's interested.

That first photo is pretty much spot on, everything is in a fine balance ( atleast to my eyes ), i could definately see it being used as material for a magazine or something. Nice work there.

A tonemapped scenery photo taken with a Canon EOS 400 D. Took three pics and then tonemapped them, but I didn't have a stand so it is slightly blurry in some spots.
