    @bballfreak6
    Incredible images as always,I have a stupid question how far do you need to drive out of town to take these Milky Way shots.

    @gerardfraser hey thanks man!

    I am quite lucky in that I only have to drive over an hour out from where I live and I am already getting some pretty dark skies (Bortle 2-3). In this shot where I was top of the mountain it was Bortle 3 but I actually had quite a bit of light pollution to contend with off the horizon from the direction I was shooting (Sunshine Coast just to the left and Redcliffe to the right) which is what the glow of the horizon is.

    It's actually possible to get MW even in light polluted areas (eg I've gotten it before from home which is Bortle 5/suburban light pollution) key is push the histogram to the right on your photo (will actually look overexposed if you just look at the image) to maximise signal to noise ratio then pull a S tone curve (or heavy contrast) in bring out the MW in post. Or take many shots over and over and stack it to again maximise SNR.

    TBH even shooting from dark sites while the MW will be more obvious in your photos straight up without processing they are ultimately very faint signals from very, very far away so you'll have to learn how to process the files to really bring them out and make them pop.

    My deep sky images I actually just do in my backyard and I take couple of hours of images to integrate and process.

    Also if you're interested you can find out how bad light pollution a place is by looking up on light pollution map on google or I use an app called "Clear Outside" which is a weather app I use to check cloud cover to plan shots but it actually gives you how dark the sky is as well. For visual purposes even Bortle 5 suburban sky where I am on a night with good seeing conditions (complete cloudless and moonless) I can just start to make out where MW is and even Bortle 3 or lower light polluted skies it's quite easily identifiable with just your eyes (won't look colourful like the pictures it'll look like a streak of cloud or gas across the sky).
