I dont understand why these sell for the price they are £300+.

HP Microservers are usally 1/3 the price of these and its a full blown pc.

my son just bought G8 microserver, £165 with £55 cashback (so after cashback £110)

dual core 2.3ghz celeron , 4gb ram , 4 * HDD bays. slim line dvd slot , USB 3.0, low profile PCIExpress slot, Gigabit Lan etc.

hes going to use it as his Mediaplayer, storage and general youtube usage, we bought a low profile AMD 6450 to drop in to give HDMI and sound with good Kodi playback.

if HP can sell this for half the cost of the above NAS why are NAS's so expensive.

Where did he buy that server from? In the US the cheapest I can configure a G8 is $470 which is nearly double £165 and that's without an OS or drives. Yeah you could go the Linux route with FreeNAS or something, but all those distros pale in comparison to Synology's -- which is honestly where most of the price probably is. Synology's DSM is like so incredibly well designed that it blew my mind that I haven't heard about them earlier then I did.

I setup a 5 drive DS1515+ a few months ago for a coworker. Does surveillance for 4, 2MP cameras. It runs his mail sever, web server and a file server. He has access to the cameras/files on his phone using the DSM iPhone apps. The entire thing took me about 45 minutes to setup and configure. The software is incredibly good.

I was itching to buy a NAS for almost a year now but I didn't like how expensive all these nases were and finally a couple of weeks ago I found a recommendation for the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8.

It does a awesome job for low cost. The boot time is painfully slow which bothered me while I was configuring it but now it just runs all day without a hitch. I'm from Sweden and I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago from Amazon.co.uk for £170

It's not exactly new tech but it runs great and pretty fast considering its hardware.

Synology seems quite overpriced compared with Qnap.
HP's microservers don't seem to have the software direction than normal NAS usually do.

I have been using Synology for a long time and I have to echo this sentiment.

Their software is absolutely first rate.
